ESP Multi Spanner

About This Item

Handy pocket-size wrench.
Quickly fixes loose jacks, pots, switches and tuners.

Store this versatile little steel wrench in your guitar case and you can quickly fix a loose output jack, control pot, pickup switch or tuning machine. Turn adjustable bridge thumbwheels more easily, too. One end of the Multi Spanner is toothed for loosening a nut; the other end tightens it. A mere .075" (1.90mm) thin, the tool can fit under a control knob and is specially angled for clearance over a guitar body or peghead.

Wish I had bought this BEFORE scratching my Les Paul...

Right tool for the right job. Sadly, I used a pair of adjustable pliers (the wrong tool) to tighten the switch ring on my black 1989 Gibson LP Standard. It slipped, marred the serrations and skipped across the paint, leaving an inch-long tribute to stupidity for me.

Lesson: if you are going to do your own maintenance on a $2,500 guitar, invest in the proper tools. Shortcuts rarely pay off and in this case, forever marred the otherwise perfect finish on a guitar I bought new nearly 30 years ago and have babied it's entire life.

Why is it worth having? Besides the obvious, the forked sections have serrations that perfectly match the serrations on the ring for a no-slip grip that tightens without any burring. It is also handy for gently prying off volume and tone knobs, although I still prefer to use a towel when possible. The machining quality of the tool is first rate and it's actually attractive.

Bottom Line: Even if you only use it once, it's money well spent. Ask my Les Paul.

Nice little tool. Works very well on many size nuts. Handy. No need for Multiple wrenches.

Just What I needed to add to my guitar tool kit. I have the basics for quick fixes and adjustments and this handy spanner is a great addition. Well constructed and easy to use.

I bought this tool as a "must have" if anything happens with the instruments or the amplifiers.

No Instructions Included

I guess the video on the website is to suffice for the instructions for how to use this tool, specifically, which way the knurled edges face for tightening or loosening. I has hoped the tool would be marked-it's not-or that there would be written instructions included-there is not. The first two things I used it on I had almost no clearance to get the tool on the nut but I suppose that's the design of the amp I worked on, not the tool. The website video did a good job of making it seem more versatile than it might be. Overall, it seems a helpful tool in limited applications.

Perfect solution

I was happy to see this brilliantly designed tool on the website. I've already used it a number of times and it works perfectly. I keep one in my guitar case and one on my work bench. So simple, but yet so effective.

Eh....

I can see how this tool is useful on a guitar pot. It is not so useful on pots on the control panel of an amp. The other knobs and the wings of the tool get in the way. For a simple tightening of a volume pot without removing the knob the tool has merit. If you have to remove the knob, a hollow shafted nut driver might serve the purpose as well.

This Thing Changed My Life

By

I have a home repair business and I can't count how many hours I probably lost over the years running between my bench and the tool box looking for the right wrench. This thing replaced a whole wrench set and has saved me so much time in the shop.

This was probably the best $11 I have ever spent.

Excellent - with suggestion

Tremendously useful tool; ingeniously simple and effective, as are most of the best ideas.

I've gotten a second one so that one can stay on my bench and the other, in my 'go-bag.'

My only suggestion on this would be to ask ESP if they could de-burr the edges of this tool during manufacturing. It's stamped steel, and the burr left is pretty sharp all the way around.
I took mine to the handiest grinder & wire-wheel combo and buzzed a little off of those sharp edges (NOT the toothed edges; those just got the wire wheel), then smoothed with the wire-wheel.
The inside surface of my two are now satin-looking (perfectly acceptable) and no longer have those sharp edges. The backs remain the appropriately highly polished 'mirrors' as supplied.
