String Action Gauge

About This Item

Fast, accurate measurements for setups. Our String Action Gauge is a "Swiss Army Ruler" for setup adjustments on any stringed instrument.

This pocket-size stainless steel rule has become a luthier's favorite in busy shops. It's the best way yet to get vital measurements on acoustic and electric instruments.
• String height
• Bridge saddle height
• Saddle slot depth
• Fret slot depth (unbound fingerboards)
• Nut height
• Pickup polepiece height

No more "three-and-a-half-64ths or 3/32" plus one of those little lines." This gauge measures in ways that regular rulers can't. —Dan Erlewine

Developed here at Stewart-MacDonald by Dan Erlewine and Don MacRostie, the gauge features a progressive string height scale: simply slide it across the frets and read the measurement under the string. It's faster to use than any ruler, and stays parallel to the fingerboard—much easier than trying to hold a ruler perpendicular to a rounded fret. The string height markers are graduated from .010" to .140" on the inch model, and from 0.25mm to 3.50mm on the metric version.

The back of the gauge has a time-saving fractional/decimal/metric conversion chart.

The String Action Gauge is made of durable stainless steel with precision-etched markings, and fits right in your pocket.

Tip: You can use the gauge to set router depth, instead of a shop ruler. It sits solidly on your router base, with the scale right where you need it.

Set It Up Right

By

I took my guitar to a new shop, just to give them support. I ask for my guitar to be setup to factory specs. When it was returned, it was in terrible shape. Lesson learned. So, I ordered some tools from StewMac and completed my first setup. I encourage every player to get acquainted with your guitar, and learn how to set it up the way you want. The Tools are spot on and take the the guesswork out of the process. Dan's book on the process was so informative. Thanks to StewMac!

Makes it easy to measure string action and neck relief

By
(Customer's Reviews)

This gauge was extremely helpful giving me insight into the action and neck relief on my acoustic guitar. I had thought the action was too high and considered trying to lower it at the bridge. This gauge allowed me to discover that neck relief was the cause, and it allowed me to accurately see the results of truss rod adjustments. This tool allows you to see adjustment increments of .005". It's easy to hold and use. The table of decimal-to-fraction equivalents on one side is convenient and very helpful. Worth every penny. Easily stowed in your guitar case compartment.

A Godsend For Quick String Height Checks

By
(Customer's Reviews)

This precision gauge is so much easier to use when checking neck relief and string height than a standard ruler or spare change. It stays flat on the frets when measuring unlike an ordinary ruler.
Well worth the money for the time it will save you

Extremely easy to use

This is a fantastic tool for guitars and basses. Prior to this I was estimating distances using a mixture of a ruler with 32nds and automotive feeler gauges. The best part is how it easily lines up across multiple frets, making it certain that you're getting a level and accurate reading. It should be noted that for checking truss rod adjustment I still use a capo and automotive feeler gauges, as it's a bit easier for me to feel the gauge hit the string than it is for me to see a .01 inch gap accurately. Overall I am more than satisfied with this purchase.
