Fret Saw

About This Item

Our Fret Slotting Saw has a rigid brass spine, and a comfortable traditionally-turned hardwood handle with ferrule. It looks right at home on a luthier's workbench.

Sheffield steel blade.
Make no mistake: this is NOT a standard hardware megamart backsaw! We started with a blade of legendary corrosion-resistant Sheffield steel, and specified .023" width to match our fretwire. We insisted on precision pull-cut teeth, to greatly reduce blade flex and jamming in harder fingerboard woods. Lastly, we designed an easy to use, removable clear acrylic depth stop. It slides up or down, with thumbscrews to precisely set any fret slot depth.

And one more thing: this saw works seamlessly with our Fret Slotting Miter Box.

The acrylic Depth Stop can be adjusted to expose as much as 1/4" of the blade, and is removable for cutting off the ends of a blank fingerboard.

Overall length 15-1/4" (387.35mm)
Cutting length 10" (254mm)
Blade depth 1-3/4" (44.45mm)

Cut accurate 90-degree slots when you use the saw with our Fret Slotting Miter Box. Add a Fret Scale Template and you'll never miscalculate your fret positions.

Could be easily improved

The saw itself is nice. My problem is with the depth stop. It works fine when cutting frets on a squared blank, but if you use it to clean out frets on a fret board that has a radius, the slides on the depth stop do not allow it to go low enough. So, for example, if you use this tool on a pre-slotted StewMac fret board that has undergone a little surface prep, the depth stop will permit you to cut almost clear through the fret board. Not good.

The solution is obvious and cost-free -- I wish SM would tweak the depth stop to make it more adjustable and versatile.

This saw is amazing with the Fret Miter Box as well.My saw is great for cutting the pin block over-lay prior to filing the ends to the binding channel. My first saw had some minor problem but was pleased with the ease of return and no extra postal charge....Really great service and very helpful,,Lost Century Music....

A Real Gem

My old blitz saw had come to an end, and I paused before I bought this saw. I shouldn't have. It's a real delight to use, very clean stroke with a perfect set at .023. I should have thrown out the old saw years ago. It's a little tall (2") so you have to watch keeping it upright, but very smooth. I sealed the walnut handle just to give it a little grip. Go ahead and buy it, you won't regret it.

Very accurate

Though I have not a Stewmac`s saw, but some England-made, it fitted it perfectly. The only one small complaint is that it could be laser-cut, not CPU-milled and therefore would not have marks on the edges.
