Product Details

For guitars and basses. Accurate template for Fender and guitars with bolt-on necks.

Dual-purpose: with patterns for both guitar and bass. Laser-cut acrylic with accurate centerline.

Use this template with our 1/2" Ball Bearing Router Bit to create a clean neck pocket for guitar or bass.

The template is slightly oversize to allow for variations in neck width and finish thickness. To rout a smaller neck pocket, reduce the template size by adding a few layers of binding tape. To learn more see instructions.

Note: both the guitar and bass routs are shaped for necks with radiused heels (Strat®, Jaguar, P-Bass®, J-Bass®). The guitar rout is not intended for use with Telecaster® necks (which have a square heel). Typical neck joint rout depth for a Fender® guitar or bass neck is 5/8".

didnt work for me

I can only speak for the guitar side of this template. I am a first time builder and I bought a replacement strat neck with maple fingerboard. This template was a little too big. I had to trace the neck and make my own template. Stewmac has a tip to put tape on the inside but the tape comes off as you rout.

I'm satisfied with this item. It's easy to use and works great, a little oversized so that is not good for using it for a genuine Fender so you have to do something so you get it right, but for my use it does not matter as I build the body and neck. I give it four star because of oversized and a little thin but it's easy to use and an ok item.

Excellent product. Makes neck routes a breeze. Thickness of acrylic is perfect. I use double sided tape to keep the template secure.

Please StewMac, lets go the next step.

This is a great template and works for most necks. If the neck heel is under 2 3/16" wide then do one side at a time and move the template. Don't use clamps. Use double sided tape. A little goes a long ways and its worth its weight in gold. That being said, this is supposedly "for Fender" but does not have a tele pocket rout. Why is this? From customers I get more requests for custom tele style guitars than any other kind. But ill have to get plexi and have a friend CNC the neck pocket for a tele into it. Ive moved this template around and made it work for a tele, but the point of the template is that you stick it on and then go. Also, as one other reviewer mentioned, a ready made 3 degree angle neck pocket would be really awesome and a real time saver. I shim up for angled pockets but if there was a template that did it for you then id buy it in a second. Part of what I do is build instruments using only hand tools, or not automation. No CNC. Having durable templates is a necessary part of my process. The lack of a tele pocket seems ridiculous for a template labels as "For Fender" since the tele is probably one of the most popular guitars on the planet even after over 60 years. So please StewMac, do what you do best and make these tools available for us small builders to get the job done right. Thanks

One of my favorite tool, very efficient, you need to use the router bit from StewMac for a better result.

I liked it

I had no trouble with it. If you are kind of light-handed you won't burn the plastic. Your bearing on your router certainly needs to be free too. Worked great for me. Although it could be a little thicker I think.

Great tool for the first time builder

My first attempt at routing a neck pocket and was bang on. As it states, you do have to add masking tape to get a nice tight fit which was fine. Another fine product from Stew Mac! Cheers!

Great Product

The majority of the negative reviews I've read on this site downplay the worth of this template because it is not cut to the exact size of their neck, but is cut 40/1000ths of an inch too large. If those same people would simply follow the instructions by applying binding tape to the inside of the template till it fits their individual neck exactly, they'd find that it is not just an incredibly accurate tool, but a versatile one as well. Needless to say, I am very impressed with this product.

Was worth a shot

I knew I was taking a chance, but the template is too narrow for the Squire neck I am using in a current build. Would be nice if there was an option for templates sized for use with a router bushing.
