Peghole Reamers

About This Item

These professional luthier’s reamers aren’t like hardware store versions. One side of our Peghole Reamers is round and smooth. This keeps the reamer centered so the hole stays truly round—essential for tuning pegs!

  • Easy to use
  • Smooth control, no chatter
  • Perfectly round holes

Standard Reamer is most often used for installing guitar tuners, enlarging holes in pickguards and lots of other tasks. The 2-degree taper matches the tuning pegs on full-size violins, violas, banjos and dulcimers.
2-degree Taper: from .200" to .375" (5mm to 9.5mm)
Cutting Length: 5.63" (143mm)

Large Reamer fits double-bass and cello tuning pegs. This big reamer comes in very handy for lots of jobs in the shop.
2-degree Taper: from .312" to .625" (7.92mm to 15.88mm)
Cutting Length: 7.88" (200.15mm)

Made of quality high-speed steel with hollow-ground cutting edges and comfortable wooden handles.

Nearly Perfect!!!

Love this tool, it cuts super cleanly and is razor sharp. Perfect for ukulele tuners! My only complaint (and this is minor) is that I would like a bit more shank length between the handle and the top of the cutting blade - it's a bit cramped at the top for those of us with large hands and I end up cutting my fingers now and then.

Necessary precision

I purchased the standard reamer as I could not find a general tool which could do the job to the necessary accuracy. I also couldn't be sure more precise tools, not specifically for luthier use, were right for this specific application. This tool is right for the job. My preferred tuners are Grover Sta-tite 18:1 and the bushes need an accurately tapered hole to ensure a secure fit. Conversely if the hole is too tight the bush could split the headstock. Whilst expensive in absolute terms in comparison to similar items from other suppliers these are reasonably priced and therefore cost effective.

I used to work with normal reamers so I know how great those are. You really get a nice, clean, round hole with these.

I found this tool to be easy to use (never having used one before) and happily it worked perfectly in fitting tuners. All five worked perfectly.

These made it a breeze to install my Gotoh tuners on my Stratocopy guitar. They require very little effort and are extremely sharp. A bit pricey but they make the job quick and easy.

replacement for lost tool

I used a violin/viola and cello size reamers with matching peg shapers for many years to fit friction pegs on lutes and fiddles, but mostly to enlarge peg holes for bushings and to fill holes for re-drilling.

I could not justify the cost of the matching peg shaper, so I cannot comment on fitting friction pegs or tapered dowels.

The reamer is certainly as fine quality as the one I purchased from a violin maker's supply over 30 years ago. It cut smoothly and evenly with no interference from residual filling dowel or lacquer drips after re-drilling and refinishing the face of an old mandolin with non-standard spacing. The handle was not quite the "work of art" of my old German-Made one, but was completely functional and comfortable.
