good tool but be careful

It does what it supposed to do, but the T-handle slides out too easily. I was cleaning up a peg hole on a very expensive banjo and the T-handle slid out of the reamer and put a big ding in the resonator. Now I have a new problem I didn't expect and may have to refinish the whole thing. It;s always something.

Don't get pegged without it!

This 5th string peg hole reamer made what appeared to be a daunting task very easy. I replaced a worn-out friction peg on my 4-decade-old Aria banjo with a new Waverly peg using this reamer. The installation looks sweet, and the new peg works wonderfully.

Stew-Mac has plenty of information to check out to do this job correctly, which helped immensely. Just follow the instructions and tips and take it slow and easy with the reamer; it's sharp and moves wood easily. Do lots of trial fitting as you go. I put some super glue on the peg splines for the final setting, so the peg won't vibrate loose.

This reamer was part of my first order from Stew-Mac, and I'll surely be back to shop with them again. Outstanding service and incredibly fast shipping. 5 Stars for Stew-Mac too!

Worked fine for me.

The reamer bottomed out in the old hole before it was large enough for the new geared peg. I had to drill out the hole until the drill hit the neck adjustment rod. At that point, I was able to ream the hole large enough to lightly tap the tuner into place. No glue. There was a little less that 1/8 inch of the serrated part of the tuner showing when I tapped it in. Seems to be tight and holding very well.

this is my second fifth-string peghole reamer . It became obvious that I waited too long to replace the old one. The new one cut so much nicer than the old one.

Low grade, cutdown import. Scrapes more than cuts.
Not up to Stewart-MacDonald"s usual high standards.

Just What I Needed

Our customer complained her 5th string was not staying in tune. It was a non-geared tuner and the hole was worn out causing the tuner to not fit tightly. We replaced the tuner with a Grover geared tuner and this reamer did a perfect job of sizing the hole properly for the new tuner. The banjo is making a comeback and I'm sure we'll have other customers who want to upgrade their 5th string tuner.

Good tool

I bought this to enlarge the holes for my Jazzmaster body to fit a Mastery bridge as they were originally too small for the thimbles. While it helped initally, in the end I enlarged the hole by hand with sandpaper and drill bit, as I didn't want the holes tapered the entire way. It's a good tool, just not exactly the right one for what I needed to do.
