Good tool for the guitar toolbox

By

I just ordered one of these string cutters and was quickly and sadly disappointed when I saw the jaws crumbling and chipping after restringing a few guitars. Come to find out StewMac had actually sent me the wire cutters instead of the string cutters. They swiftly shipped me out the right tool which seemed to work much better for clipping strings. I never really gave it much thought until now but apparently the density and hardness of the steel in most guitar strings is enough to quickly destroy a pair of light weight wire cutters.

This is a premium tool at a great price!

This is simply the best pair of side cutters I've found at anywhere near this price. Check out the big box stores and see what they have. They'll probably cost a few bucks more and the cutting jaw will not close accurately. They simply won't cut an E or B string. This set from Stew Mac has jaws that are sharp and line up absolutely perfectly. I'm getting a second set to keep at my wiring bench.

I like this.

I have used many cutters in my 53 years of playing and replacing strings, but I like this one very much. I like the size and spring action, and it cuts quick and clean.

Sharp cutter with very comfortable grip. Cuts bass strings as easily as guitar wire.

Nice tool, nicer with one mod

This is a nice string cutter, however I noticed that the edges of it are very sharp - any contact with the guitar would cause little nicks. I broke the edges with some emery cloth and now if I happen to hit the guitar with the edge of the tool there is much less chance of a nick. I'd give it five stars if this was done at the factory.

Outstanding

I've had a half dozen cutters at the bottom of my toolbox, none of them were the right size or made a nice clean cut, especially on the treble. They all went in the garbage after the first time I used these.

Great string cutters; Require some refining for commercial use.

I love these cutters! They give you real close access, are sharp, and stay sharp quite well. There is only one bummer: There are two spring blades in the handle that return it to open position, one with a post and one with a notch, and the notched spring always breaks about 1/8" into its length after about 1.5-2 months of commercial use (at maybe about 500 or so "cycles" of snipping a week). At the price, it's nothing that's tragic as it's a manageable cost to replace, but if the return springs could be strengthened substantially in any way, I feel it would be worth a redesign. I'd rather buy a $20-$30 pair of amazing cutters that last a year of commercial use.

I'd recommend them regardless of your intent, but just know that if you do frequent work on instruments, such as commercially, that these will need regular replacement.
