Fret Crimper

About This Item

Crimps the tang to fit oversize fret slots. Hardened steel jaws press slight scallops into a fret tang to fit an oversize slot.

Works on a variety of slot widths. Simply vary the pressure as needed.

Overall length: 7" (178mm)
Jaw width: 13/32" (10.24mm)
Comfortable rubber-coated handles.

This unique tool is based on a technique developed by repairman Frank Ford.

The Fret Crimper is included in our money-saving Fret Tang Tool Set along with the Fret Barber, our handy tool for quickly trimming the barbs on longer lengths of fretwire.

We recommend our book FretWork Step By Step for details on the technique of compression fretting.

Works on stainless frets, too!
All of our tools are suitable for use on stainless-steel fretwire, with the exception of our Fret Tang Nippers. Modern stainless-steel fretwire is known to be harder than the traditional nickel-silver blends, but our own shop experience indicates the wire does not cause premature wear of files or sandpapers.

When frets don't fit the slot, resize the fret tang

This week, Dan Erlewine's pumping iron (nickel steel, actually!) He's showing how to bulk up your skinny fretwire and slim down your fat fretwire.

Great Tool but...

(Customer's Reviews)

This great and works well on standard fretwire. However it is not strong nor durable enough for Stainless-Steel wire. I used it on 2 stainless re-frets over the course of 2 days. By the midway point of the second re-fret I was having to stop after crimping every fret to re-establish the angles on the interior of the pliers with a small 3-corner file. For the price and the advertising that it is fine for use on stainless wire, I'm a very disappointed in the quality.

I ended up with fret board slots that were too wide. This little tool absolutely saved the day!
