About This Item

Create smooth, planed surfaces using your drill press
Our Safe-T-Planer is the affordable way to add a planer to your shop. In your drill press, it planes wood to any thickness, leaving it smooth and ready for sanding.

Plane large or small pieces
The Safe-T-Planer cuts a path 2-3/4" wide. Large surfaces are handled by making multiple passes.

    Use the Safe-T-Planer for:
  • Solid guitar bodies
  • Necks and pegheads
  • Peghead overlays
  • Nut and saddle blanks
  • Fingerboards
  • Unjoined guitar tops and backs
  • Unbent guitar sides

High speed steel cutters
The Safe-T-Planer is machined from aluminum with a steel shank. Its three high-speed steel cutters are heat-treated for durability. Each cutter features a spare edge, to double the working life.

Fits any 1/2" drill press chuck. Comes with instructions, including how to make a simple plywood planing table for your drill press.

Replacement Cutters are sold in a set of 3. These cutters fit the StewMac Safe-T-Planer, and are not compatible with other brands.

Width of cut: 2-3/4" (69.85mm)
Cutter depth: 1/4" (6.35mm)
Overall diameter: 3-1/8" (79.38mm)

Why did I wait so long?

Fantastic tool that is remarkably useful. I had long seen the advertisements for it, but was never even interested for some reason. I was getting along fine with some jigs, routers, and my thickness sander. This tool just made my production faster, and easier. Love it.

Disappionted...

I'm sorry Stewmac, but this tool is to difficult to set up properly. I'm just not able to get this square enough to get a good result. A bit of the problem may come from my drill press, but I think most of us will have that issue. And it's very time consuming to set up every time it's needed. If you are able to get this to work good, then you probably have other tools that do the same jobb better. So for me this is a waste of money.

Very convenient

I almost hate to review this for fear of not doing it justice. But my only experience with it so far is rough thickness planing a guitar body. I started with a 18x13 piece of swamp ash that I needed to reduce from 2" to 1 1/2" thick in preparation for final planing with my friend's sanding planer. It was a lot of work, very time consuming, and only did an OK job...not as accurate as I'd hoped, however. But in all fairness, I'm sure most of that is from the play in the shaft of the drill press.
I think that for smaller pieces it would do a much better job.
Plus, the cutters in the Safe-T-Planer got dull very fast. They don't seem like properly hardened steel (or perhaps they weren't very sharp to begin with).
Would I buy it again? At this price, probably not. At $30, maybe. But I think in the future I'll just use my buddy's sanding planer for large pieces of wood...WAY more accurate, smoother finish, quicker, less mess

Reasonable planner cost

By

Verified Buyer

Need something to thickness small picture frame sides without buying a $300 to $600 planer. This will do my work with out breaking the bank and leave money for other needs as well. Glad I came across it on u-tube. I recycle old oak flooring that has been thrown out to the curb to make picture frames and other items as well. Very nice tool. I use it on my Radial Arm Saw which had a similar type of tool. However they don't supply them anymore and I needed to fine a replacement tool.
Thanks for quick shipment of the tool and the spare cutters I bought to have on hand. Much appreciated. Dan

If you follow the instructions and set it up right with a table and fence, keep it sharp and use the right speed, it does a great job! 2-3 passes from 4mm to 2.5mm with no tear out and a finish you can sand with 120-220 grit or scraper.
