Fret/Fingerboard Leveling Files

About This Item

These custom-made files give you a handle on your fret work!

These files work quickly to level frets or fingerboards, leaving a smooth finish.

Each file is 1" wide with a comfortable hardwood handle. The 6" length is for general use, and the 3" length is for spot leveling.

The fret leveling files have single-cut teeth with a steeper angle to eliminate "chatter." They cut faster and smoother than most fret leveling files we've used, they work quickly, and they're great for dressing and beveling fret ends.

The fingerboard leveler is a double-cut file for ebony, rosewood and pearl inlays. Despite its rough appearance, it leaves a smooth finish.

Essential for Fretting
This item is 1 of the 7 tools included in our Essential Fretting Tool Set, a compilation of tools you'll need for the fundamentals of fret work. The set also includes our book, Fret Work Step-By-Step by Erick Coleman with Dan Erlewine.

Works on stainless frets, too!
All of our tools are suitable for use on stainless-steel fretwire, with the exception of our Fret Tang Nippers. Modern stainless-steel fretwire is known to be harder than the traditional nickel-silver blends, but our own shop experience indicates the wire does not cause premature wear of files or sandpapers.

Pricey, but works great.

As with a lot of very good quality tools, it's pricey but it works great. Just after taking it out of the box I leveled the frets on a uke, and later that same day I leveled the frets on a nylon string guitar. Just the right heft and feel. I used to use sandpaper adhered to a 1" x 2" piece of steel tubing. This works much better and I can have the leveling job done in less time than it took me to mount the sandpaper to the tubing. With a little care (using a finger resting on the body of the instrument as a guide) it also bevels the edges of the frets very nicely. It cuts at just the right rate, fast enough to get the job done quickly, but not so fast as to be hard to control. This tool should still be working beautifully long after you've forgotten what you paid for it.

Worked great!!!

I'm doing my first guitar build. Since it's a first build, I went with a very inexpensive body and neck. The frets weren't level, so I bought this to level them off. It worked great and didn't take much time to get things leveled off. I'll also be able to use it for future projects and leveling some of my older guitars where the frets are worn from playing.

Used this on a Les Paul kit build i’m working on. Was really pleased with the result. Smooth and easy to use, removed material quickly, but not too quickly.

The construction of the tool was a bit sloppy and not at all what I expected from my first Stew Mac purchase, especially not for the price. But it works well, I guess thats what matters. But I will remember the construction next time I consider their tools. I must say however that shipping was very fast and tracking was accurate. They said 3-5 days and it was there in 3. I do appreciate that!

Had been working the "onesy twoseys" frets, rocking and sanding, etc. A couple of clients had bigger issues so I took the plunge and for the set.
How accurately and quickly these tools remove fret material is awesome.
The accuracy of your work and the time you save doing it is well worth the prove of admission!

Great Product

I have always just used sandpaper on a beam to level frets but after using this one time I can already tell it will last a very long time and it's so much faster than the old method. I always stuck masking tape to my beam and a strip on sandpaper that was trimmed to size. Then glued it together with a couple drops of super glue. Took me 20 minutes to get setup just to level frets. Now I grab one tool and can be done before I would have even started using my old method before.
