Gauged Nut Slotting Files

About This Item

Our tempered edge-cut nut files produce round-bottom slots for nuts and saddles. Ensure your strings seat properly in the nut without buzzing!

Each chrome-alloy steel file has twin 4" cutting edges. Among our most popular tools, these professional files help you get the job done quickly and correctly.

What files do I need?
Choose nut slotting files that are the same size or no more that a few thousands larger than your individual string gauges. A smaller file can also be rocked side-to-side to widen a slot to the desired size. For example, you can cut a .043" slot with a .042" file by moving it around a bit.

Tip: Slotting Tune-o-matic style saddles
Nut slotting files work great for metal saddles. Choose your file size as you would when slotting a nut: use the same gauge as the string, or a few thousandths larger. After filing to the desired depth, we suggest polishing the slot with Mitchell's Abrasive Cord to remove file marks and burrs.

Slotting files a must have for general maintenance

By
(Customer's Reviews)

The accuracy that these files bring to nut and bridge saddles work is perfect. A must have if your going to attempt this type of work. It would be nice if they were a little less expensive or in a set discounted price. But well worth the money regadless as they do save time in setting up a new bridge or nut or just replacing saddles.

Love these files

By
(Customer's Reviews)

I bought a .10 nut slotting file to add to my set. I recently switched to a .10 high-E string on my main acoustic guitar after using a heavier gauge for many years. I'm going to fill the slot on the existing nut and recut with this file.

I'm not a tech or luthier, but I previously used these files to setup a tall nut for converting an acoustic guitar to a lap slide guitar. A little masking tape to protect the fretboard and headstock combined with patience and a gentle touch is all you need to use these files. The excellent results make these files a great investment.

Must Have!

These are a must for every shop. With every nut replacement, setup, level and crown, or refret the nut always needs some attention. These allow you to do it properly. I have them all in my shop and am replacing this one because it only lasted fourteen years??!! Five stars all the way.

The nut slot for the A string on our newly built custom guitar was too shallow. This file fixed it immediately.

The proper tools.

If you are adjusting a factory made nut or making a new nut from scratch you must have these to do the job properly and precisely. I see no other way as being productive enough as what a great set of files can do.

A must have tool

By

This is not a tool that the user can successfully make, however, at one time or another every luthier would have needed this tool and would have spent a lot of time trying to find a tool and a way to do what this tool does- successfully, in seconds.
