Our tempered edge-cut nut files produce round-bottom slots, to ensure that the strings seat properly in the nut without buzzing.

Each chrome-alloy steel file has twin 4" cutting edges. Among our most popular tools, these professional files help you get the job done quickly and correctly.

What files do I need?
Choose nut slotting files that are the same size or no more that a few thousands larger than your individual string gauges. A smaller file can also be rocked side-to-side to widen a slot to the desired size. For example, you can cut a .043" slot with a .042" file by moving it around a bit.

Tip: Slotting Tune-o-matic style saddles
Nut slotting files work great for metal saddles. Choose your file size as you would when slotting a nut: use the same gauge as the string, or a few thousandths larger. After filing to the desired depth, we suggest polishing the slot with Mitchell's Abrasive Cord to remove file marks and burrs.

Get The Right Tool For The Job

By Pete Davis from Brisbane, Australia

Great quality files. I bought files in about 3 goes and I would recommend getting the right sizes early. I found this especially important on the lighter strings as its a far better job with the exact size file. Tip: My lovely wife made me the terrific canvas pouch which the files all fit into so I can just select the right file as I work across the guitar. This saves searching for the file size every time you put them down. Stew Mac could offer such a pouch as an extra accessory!

These files are worth the money. They are very well made and I find them a necessity in my shop for slotting nuts. I used to use a small set of jeweler's files but these files are superior by all standards.

You will love them!

Finally broke down and bought a proper set of nut slotting files. I'm impressed by how fast and straight they can slot bone nuts. Even you, tiny little 0.010" file! You're tougher than you look.
