Gauged Nut Slotting Files

About This Item

Our tempered edge-cut nut files produce round-bottom slots for nuts and saddles. Ensure your strings seat properly in the nut without buzzing!

Each chrome-alloy steel file has twin 4" cutting edges. Among our most popular tools, these professional files help you get the job done quickly and correctly.

What files do I need?
Choose nut slotting files that are the same size or no more than a few thousandths larger than your individual string gauges. A smaller file can also be rocked side to side to widen a slot to the desired size. For example, you can cut a .043" slot with a .042" file by moving it around a bit.

Save 10% by purchasing the complete set
Always have the right gauge for cutting and shaping string slots on any instrument. Complete set of nineteen files includes every size we offer.

Tip: Slotting Tune-o-matic style saddles
Nut slotting files work great for metal saddles. Choose your file size as you would when slotting a nut: use the same gauge as the string, or a few thousandths larger. After filing to the desired depth, we suggest polishing the slot with Mitchell's Abrasive Cord to remove file marks and burrs.

Hey, these dudes are pretty cool

I bought 8 sizes to start. I used them last night and was very pleased. I had no problem with the flex on the lighter files as I typically like to use two hands for some reason. I think I'll order the other sizes I might need today.

Great Files but................

By

I used these files to slot 2 brand new nuts out of bleached bone. I found them very acurate and easy to use. They rounded the slots nicely, and with a bit of a rolling action, I was able to fine tune each slot for the player's string set. But what is with the 0.010" file? Would be nice to see a bit of extra meat in the middle of that one for some support/rigidity. The one I recieved wasn't even straight. It was in a deformed curve due to it being so flimsy. Except for the 0.010" file, I think this set is great.

Guaged nut slotting files

Bought a pre-slotted brass nut for my Tele project. The two top slots were so shallow that the strings slipped out when bending on the lower frets. What a great job these files did (and on BRASS). Thanks Stewmac!!!!

Great products. Do their intended job with ease. The .010 needs serious reinforcement, but the others work very well.

After several new nut installations these nut files have produced a perfect fit and precise control of slot width and depth....you gotta have these if you expect a proper string fit.

Nut Slotting Files

I got an unusual request to make a nut for a 5 string bass, strung with a high B, rather than low. I used the black tusq nut and the wonderful nut files. The files cut through like butter. In not time flat, the job was done!

I've used these nut files for five or six years. They work well and last quite a long time. They cut relatively fast and leave a nice round bottomed hole.

This files are great for nuts, and for saddles like the ones on resonator biscuits. I'll certainly be ordering the rest of the set!

These files produce good slots but the light gage one is very flimsy and came curved. I guess from the manufacture process. Working carefully with it produced my best string seat so far. After all what don't you have to be careful with while building guitars.
