Details

Our tempered edge-cut nut files produce round-bottom slots for nuts and saddles. Ensure your strings seat properly in the nut without buzzing!

Each chrome-alloy steel file has twin 4" cutting edges. Among our most popular tools, these professional files help you get the job done quickly and correctly.

What files do I need?
Choose nut slotting files that are the same size or no more that a few thousands larger than your individual string gauges. A smaller file can also be rocked side-to-side to widen a slot to the desired size. For example, you can cut a .043" slot with a .042" file by moving it around a bit.

Tip: Slotting Tune-o-matic style saddles
Nut slotting files work great for metal saddles. Choose your file size as you would when slotting a nut: use the same gauge as the string, or a few thousandths larger. After filing to the desired depth, we suggest polishing the slot with Mitchell's Abrasive Cord to remove file marks and burrs.

My favorites so far

I like these best of all the nut slotting files I’ve tried. The bottoms of the slots come out truly rounded. I have a set of similar slotting files, purchased from StewMac about 20 years ago, and the current files are an improvement - they are definitely rounder - closer to a half circle than the old ones.
The one difficulty I’ve had with these is that when the very thin files get down to a certain depth, the file starts to get hung up in the nut material – the same way a saw might get hung up in wood when you get too deep...but that’s not a problem with the file, per se. I may fix this by cutting the top of the nut lower before I deepen the slots.

GREAT QUALITY!

I love my .010 gauge file! It's the best way to start my nut slotting especially for the treble strings.

If you do a lot of nut work then you need these files - accurate gauges and hard wearing - I use them in all my books Paul Balmer

Awesome

Wrote a long review attesting to how awesome these are and couldn't do without them. Anyway it got erased when I went to correct some things. So get the file set, it's expensive but the guitars will be at another greater level.

Combined with string spacing rule these files give perfect result. I had some problems with 0.010" one the first time but turns out it was human error :)

Love these

I have the full set and they get a lot of use. They still cut like new. Take extra care using the 0.010" file though as it would be easy to break it if it should snag.
