Fret End Dressing File

About This Item

The first thing a player feels is the fret ends, so always shape them with this file. Smooth, non-marring edges glide on the fingerboard while the fine-toothed sides deburr and round the fret.

For rounding, shaping and deburring.
This specialized file dresses the ends of the frets after they've been installed, trimmed flush and beveled.

One thin edge is ground "safe" to help protect the fretboard, and the other rounded over. This file cuts only where it needs to: on both sharp corners of the unground thin edge, and on both of the wider toothed cutting surfaces.

The cutting surfaces smooth the fret end bevel, and the sharp corners nip off the sharp burrs at the edge of the fret bevel where it meets the edge of the neck. With the safe edge facing down, the cutting surfaces of this little file do a good job of rounding over and shaping the fret ends.

File dimensions are .062" x .125" x 6", with 3" cutting surfaces.

Essential for Fretting
This item is 1 of the 7 tools included in our Essential Fretting Tool Set, a compilation of tools you'll need for the fundamentals of fret work. The set also includes our book, Fret Work Step-By-Step by Erick Coleman with Dan Erlewine.

Works on stainless frets, too!
All of our tools are suitable for use on stainless-steel fretwire, with the exception of our Fret Tang Nippers. Modern stainless-steel fretwire is known to be harder than the traditional nickel-silver blends, but our own shop experience indicates the wire does not cause premature wear of files or sandpapers.

A must for any guitar owner

Forget about being a luthier - this is a must have for any guitar owner. It is very easy to use to clean up fret ends. Even brand new guitars will have that one or two fret ends that stick out a bit and this file is perfect for fixing those sort of snags.

This little file is very easy to use. The narrow edges (one flat, one rounded) are smooth, making the job that much easier by not needing to do any masking to avoid marring binding or finger board. This file exceeded my expectations.

I have to be honest, when I first looked at this file I was skeptical after seeing the size of it.Boy was I wrong!I immediately put it to work and it worked better than any other file I have ever used. So,I guess it goes to prove that size ISN'T everything!!!

It really works fast!

I had a guitar with very sharp fret ends. It made playing it extremely uncomfortable. I got this file and wow, does it take the edge down quick! In a very short time I had smooth ended frets that were very comfortable to play. This is a truly wonderful file and it did not mark up the fingerboard, as the teeth are not on the side that contacts the board.
Great work, StewMac! Thank You!

Works but not like I thought.

This thing is tiny. I was very surprised by the shoe box sized box it came in and the $10 shipping for something that would have fit in a letter envelope. I bought this to dress the frets on my 66’ Jazzmaster neck. I have watched the Stewmac videos but the rounded edge still cut into my binding. If you get this be aware of all these things. You will need to buy some guards. The file itself doesn’t protect your frets and binding the way it is advertised. It does work though. My frets are more rounded and starting to feel better. It will take some time before they get to feeling perfect. Great file but not what I was exactly expecting and surprisingly small for the $25 total. Hopefully I’ll get all the mileage out of it i need.
