Double-edge Nut Files

About This Item

The most durable and efficient nut-slotting files available. Specially designed for nut slotting, each file cuts two different width slots.

Each 9/16" x 7-5/8" (14.29mm x 193.67mm) steel file cuts on the edges only, and tapers from the center to a different thickness on each cutting edge. The set of six files does the work of twelve!

Rubber-coated handles give firm, comfortable control for the job. The complete set includes edge widths for filing round-bottom nut slots on most stringed instruments, including basses. Each file's cutting edge is approximately 3-7/8" (98.43mm) long.

What files do I need?
Choose nut slotting files that are the same size or no more that a few thousands larger than your individual string gauges. A smaller file can also be rocked side-to-side to widen a slot to the desired size. For example, you can cut a .043" slot with a .042" file by moving it around a bit.

The most popular Double-edge Nut Files are included in the Essential Nut Making Tool Kit, which has all the basic tools you'll need for shaping, string-spacing, slotting and fitting string nuts like a pro.

Tip: Customize your files
We recommend that you mark on each side of your files so while working you can quickly tell the different gauge of cut.

Here's how: make a cut on a scrap piece of bone or wood with both sides of the nut file, then measure the width of each cut with feeler gauges to determine which side is which. Guitar strings of known gauges will also work as measuring tools in a pinch.

Once you have determined the proper edge, mark the file accordingly with a permanent marker.

After many nut file purchases these are still the best

These work better than all of the other flat files I have tried, even when fairly dull. Still the best.

Cool files

I have not yet used them but they look good to me. I used to be a machinist and have somewhat of a sense about good tools, these files fit the bill.
I have purchased other StewMac tools with intent of working up to the neck jig. I have been very pleased with all my purchases. My goal is to have a complete neck adjustment/repair capability for my guitars, basses and other stringed instruments, StewMac is where I get my guitar tools and supplies.

Like someone else said, B string on electric is a problem

By

I bought these and they worked as advertised. Per the product description, "use a file the same size or slightly larger than the string," I used the .020 to cut out my 0.013" B string slot. Too big. Stewmac responded to that comment with one of their own advising a +/- 0.004" tolerance, but I think the product description should be amended to make this clearer. I think in hindsight I should have used the 0.012" file for that string. Minor gripe concerning the instructions, the tools are great.

Good files.

I use it for several mounths, it works great.
But this set is not suitable for most electric guitars because there is not file with 0.010"/0.017" width.
Also, on many dreadnought guitar uses .052" - .054" sixth string.
On 7-string electric guitars often use .062" - .064" seventh string.
I think, would be great, if files with .054"/.064" and .010"/.017" width will be added to this set, then it can be used for all kinds of guitars.

Response from StewMac

Thank you for your review. These files will work so long as the string gauge and the file size are within +/- 0.004" of each other. Ideally, you would want them to match up perfectly and we definitely appreciate your feedback regarding offering more sizes. Suggestions like this have been the catalyst for change in many of the products that we offer.

fairly new to working on nut slots. My first nut turned out ok using a thin file to cut initial slot and welding tip cleaners to open slot and round the bottom. After that, I got another file to cut the bigger slots. Worth the money. Take your time and follow the directions on how to make a nut on the stew mac website.
