Double-edge Fret File

About This Item

Our best-selling fret crowning file!
Precision-cut teeth for accurate fret shaping.

Each of our popular traditional 7-3/8" x 5/8" tool-steel files has two different 4" hollow-ground cutting edges, for recrowning a variety of fretwire sizes. These files were designed by luthiers for luthiers and are an economical way to get your fretting kit started. The handle is rubber-coated for comfort.

Works on stainless frets, too!
All of our tools are suitable for use on stainless-steel fretwire, with the exception of our Fret Tang Nippers. Modern stainless-steel fretwire is known to be harder than the traditional nickel-silver blends, but our own shop experience indicates the wire does not cause premature wear of files or sandpapers.

I still wonder how I crowned my frets before. Exellent tool.

Great shaping file

Works great for rough fret shaping after leveling. Holding up well on both nickel and stainless steel fret jobs.

Perfect weight

Not so heavy that it over cuts, not so light that it takes too much pressure. Nicely done.

Coarse

This is a good file for removing material fast. But it is a relatively coarse cut file, and leaves chatter marks. I can't think of many situations where you would need a file this aggressive on frets.

It takes some time to master the crowning with it.

Didn't work well for me :(

By
(Customer's Reviews)

I love everything I've purchased from StewMac so far but I couldn't get these to work for me no matter which size I used, how hard or light I pressed, or how fast or slow I went. They chewed the fret wire up terribly and it took some time and work to get the deep lines they gouged into the them out and get them smooth again.

Love this file. Take little effort and does a fine job. Very few chatter marks.
