Double-edge Fret File

About This Item

Our best-selling fret crowning file!
Precision-cut teeth for accurate fret shaping.

Each of our popular traditional 7-3/8" x 5/8" tool-steel files has two different 4" hollow-ground cutting edges, for recrowning a variety of fretwire sizes. These files were designed by luthiers for luthiers and are an economical way to get your fretting kit started. The handle is rubber-coated for comfort.

Works on stainless frets, too!
All of our tools are suitable for use on stainless-steel fretwire, with the exception of our Fret Tang Nippers. Modern stainless-steel fretwire is known to be harder than the traditional nickel-silver blends, but our own shop experience indicates the wire does not cause premature wear of files or sandpapers.

Does the job

I think the files do a decent job.
I am a little shocked at the $40 price tag.
Seems like a $20 item.

Still works fine

By
(Customer's Reviews)

This fret file have served me for more than 4 years now. Medium and wide is about fine for 90% of fret dress applications. Have done 5-6 stainless steel fret dresses as well (along with more than a hundred nickel ones). Still going strong. Good tool.

I still wonder how I crowned my frets before. Exellent tool.

Great shaping file

By
(Customer's Reviews)

Works great for rough fret shaping after leveling. Holding up well on both nickel and stainless steel fret jobs.

Perfect weight

By
(Customer's Reviews)

Not so heavy that it over cuts, not so light that it takes too much pressure. Nicely done.

Coarse

By
(Customer's Reviews)

This is a good file for removing material fast. But it is a relatively coarse cut file, and leaves chatter marks. I can't think of many situations where you would need a file this aggressive on frets.

It takes some time to master the crowning with it.
