Double-edge Fret File

About This Item

Our best-selling fret crowning file!
Precision-cut teeth for accurate fret shaping.

Each of our popular traditional 7-3/8" x 5/8" tool-steel files has two different 4" hollow-ground cutting edges, for recrowning a variety of fretwire sizes. These files were designed by luthiers for luthiers and are an economical way to get your fretting kit started. The handle is rubber-coated for comfort.

Works on stainless frets, too!
All of our tools are suitable for use on stainless-steel fretwire, with the exception of our Fret Tang Nippers. Modern stainless-steel fretwire is known to be harder than the traditional nickel-silver blends, but our own shop experience indicates the wire does not cause premature wear of files or sandpapers.

Great tool!

I used the double edged fret file to recrown the new frets on '67 Tele maple neck, it made quick work of job leaving no chatter marks or lines. I actually spent more time taping up the fingerboard/neck than I did on the frets, Great tool.

At first, I wasn't satisfied until I learned how to use it. I suggest some practicing on some old frets before using it for a real job and it will be perfect. Durability is very good!

This just works for recrowning frets. Doesn't take much to get the job done.

Practice makes perfect!

I've had this file for a while now and I've done several fret jobs. My initial reaction was that this file just doesn't work very well compared to the diamond coated ones. I didn't give up and kept using it and noticed a couple things on my last fret job. There are good and bad aspects to this. The bad is this file is very aggressive and like a lot of folks are commenting, it can leave chatter marks. You have to work on your technique.
I got plenty of time working on my technique because the fret job I did had to be redone because of all the tiny chatter marks. The second time around I went more slowly and carefully and it paid off. Things came out much better, simply from doing two jobs back to back and really paying attention to how it's cutting. A big thing I noticed was the file doesn't always cover the entire flattened fret. You have to make passes across the fret with the file making contact with one side of it then the other until it's rounded enough to do a full pass over the entire thing while making contact. This is a very subtle difference. I suggest doing some fret work on an old beater to get the hang of this file first.
Now, having said all that, I plan to keep the file and use it as. It does a good job now that I've figured it out. I also plan to buy a 300 grit file to help clean up the scratches.

Had been using a Gurian style which works ok. This file is much faster. Very sharp. A little control on your part and let the file do the rest.

I think the files do a decent job.
I am a little shocked at the $40 price tag.
Seems like a $20 item.
