3-Corner Fret Dressing Files

About This Item

Specially made for traditional fret crowning and shaping.

Smooth corners protect the fretboard.
These special files are for those who prefer a traditional method of fret crowning. Their smooth corners won't leave scratches in the fretboard, and they're great for shaping the ends of the frets.

The small fine-cut file has 3" x 1/8" tapered cutting surfaces, and the medium-cut file has 5" x 1/4" tapered surfaces. The large file is known as a cant saw file, and is a favorite of our fret expert Dan Erlewine and many other well-known luthiers. It has a versatile flattened-triangle shape, with a 4-5/8" x 1/2" and two 4-5/8" x 5/16" cutting surfaces. All files have comfortable rubber-coated handles.

Works on stainless frets, too!
All of our tools are suitable for use on stainless-steel fretwire, with the exception of our Fret Tang Nippers. Modern stainless-steel fretwire is known to be harder than the traditional nickel-silver blends, but our own shop experience indicates the wire does not cause premature wear of files or sandpapers.

You won't find these files at Sears....

Working on guitars as a hobby and still new to the process, I wasn't aware of the use of a triangle file to "rough in" the frets before crowning. Unlike you average hardware variety triangle files, these files do not have cutting surfaces on the corners. Still protecting the fretboard with tape, etc., the files give you the ability to file the sides of the frets while dramatically reducing the likelihood of damaging the fret board. In my limited experience, it's expecting too much from a crowning file to rough in and crown the frets. I like the fact that StewMac isn't a broker of tools and provides tools made to their requirements/specification.

This file is outstanding quality for the money. I couldn't be happier. I've used it to shape my frets better and crown them. Solid, high quality stuff. Highly recommended for finishing and shaping frets.

Excellent idea, but ...

Corners of the file need to be a little smoother. This file will still mark up the fretboard while shaping frets. I recommend the 2 sided fret file with the smooth rounded edge

Corners are still sharp

The corners on this file are still quite sharp and would certainly damage a fretboard.
