Seam Separation Knife

About This Item

The ideal knife for removing tops, backs and fingerboards from most instruments.

The stiff 3-3/4" x 3/4" high-carbon steel blade has a long knife edge that is capable of cleanly entering narrow cracks for separating a glue seam.

The gentle wedge-shaped cross-section exerts the ideal pressure to help the glue yield, yet doesn't tend to cut into the wood. The blade can be heated and moisture applied to help speed the work. Hardwood handle.

A superb tool.

This is an excellent tool for removing backs. It does take a little practice. To avoid splitting cover all areas likely to split with binding tape or Scotch green tape. Don't use the sharp tip. Instead use the longest possible length of blade against the area along the binding rebate and back or top that you want to separate. You have to remove the binding first. Won't work through binding. You may well break some liner blocks, but those are easy to fix. I have used this hundreds of times with great success.

Also great for splitting off small bits of wood for various uses. It can work like a mini-froe.

Also, when I am in the dog house I can with it. Comes extremely sharp!

not so good

I'm sorry, but I cannot recommend this knife for the advertised purpose. I don't like the sharp point, and the thick blade promotes cracks when removing tops and backs. To be sure, it is excellent for opening cardboard shipping boxes. A much better tool is and old-fashioned kitchen knife of a type often found in antique stores. I have been using mine for 24 years and have also found it excellent for separating tops and loosening fingerboard tongues before steaming out a neck. The tip is round, which is safer on finishes, the blade is way thinner but thick and rigid enough while having some flexibility. Also, the edge is plenty sharp for the job but not so sharp as to be a great danger to the hands. Mine has an ivoroid handle and was made in Sheffield, England.

Surprisingly Useful

It works very well as a seam separator with just the right amount of wedge shape and blade stiffness to be useful. I find I often use it for other things such as wedging between the work piece and the template to release the double stick tape.

Strong

This is my go-to tool when a seam is resisting my efforts to separate it. Very sharp, no gouging, but strong enough to apply necessary leverage.

Super useful for opening up seams. The razor edge is just that - quite sharp. A no-brainer, especially given the price.

When you need a good, sharp, sturdy blade to wedge in between things, this is your knife. For the price, it is superbly made and useful in many applications.
