Inch or metric models for archtop carving!
To carve an archtop instrument you need fast, precise measurements of critical top and back thicknesses. Our caliper does the job with just a flick of your thumb.

The dial indicator is accurate to .001" (the metric model to 0.01mm) for thicknesses up to 1" (25mm). It has an adjustable zero point, and can also be positioned for left-hand use. You can install the removable brass foot for convenient freestanding operation, or take your measurements freehand; the sturdy lightweight aluminum frame is easy to handle.

Good to .2 inches

This is a great tool for the range of finish dimensions of a top or bottom, but I noticed that anything above ~ .150 inches the brass pull on the end of the dial caliper actually gets in the way and causes errors in measurements of as much as .050.

An excellent tool, extremely accurate when used the right way. I need it only for measuring top and back thicknesses and perhaps accuracy up to 0,1 mm would be sufficient for this job.

An accurate, well made tool that I'm sure will prove invaluable. I am using it on violin plates where accuracy is essential. The small graduations make it ideal for this kind of work. Recommended.

This is a joy to use, it's accurate and looks gorgeous . I keep mine hanging on the wall where I can always grab it quickly. Sturdy frame, easily readable dial and good ergonomics for right or left hand. Glad I got this tool!

Essential tool.

I've been using this wonderful thickness caliper for over a year on my mando soundboards and backs. It is designed specifically for that task, and does it well. Recently, the tool fell to the floor from about 2 feet. When I picked it up, the dial indicator wouldn't work correctly, even though the words "shock proof" are printed on the face. I didn't want to put the same quality dial indicator on this great tool, so I ordered a very high quality one. i now have a "tricked out" thickness caliper, that's even better than ever.

Very well made and accurate- just wish the throat was deeper so you could get it into an assembled instrument....

Well made, accurate and reasonably priced (the same tool in Europe is twice the price of this one).

The Graduating Calipers are a fantastic deal . They are solid and work accurately. I am a machinist by day and use tools everyday, for the money this is a fine choice.

Thickness Caliper

Several luthiers suggested that thickness calipers are not really necessary. You can make one out of wood or some other homemade version. However, since voicing the guitar is a direct funcion of thicknessing the top, I decided to purchase the StewMac calipers. I do not regret that decision. I now believe that if you are serious about making a quality instrument, one of these calipers is a must. If you cut corners here, I think you will be sorry later.

Thicknessing Caliper

As someone who works in metric sizes I am very pleased with Stewmac's latest addition to their measuring instruments. Measuring in small sizes is easier for me in millimetres rather than thous and decimal inches. But I suppose it is what you are used to. The instrument is light easy to use and looks an item of proper quality
