Understring Radius Gauges

About This Item

Fast, accurate bridge saddle adjustment.
Each of these unique gauges has an accurately radiused arc on both the top and bottom surfaces, and is shaped to fit easily under the strings.

Use the bottom curvature to determine your fretboard radius, and the matching top curvature becomes a reference for setting string saddle heights for best playability.

Low profile fits tight spots. The slim shape of our understring gauges allow you to read the fretboard radius even with the strings on! This is also handy for matching pickup polepiece heights to the arc of the strings. And setting bridge saddles is easier than ever.

The set of 9 gauges includes:
7-1/4", 9-1/2", 10", 12", 14", 15", 16", 17" and 20" radii.

Standard width 6-string guitars and most 4-string basses—spans a string spread up to 2-5/8" (66.68mm).

Extra-wide covers string spreads up to 3-3/4" (95.25mm)—enough for 4-string, 5-string, and many 6-string basses. They'll also handle 7-string and 8-string guitars.

Stainless steel.

Fine Tuning Your Setup

I got these gauges for two reasons. 1) To determine the radius of various guitar necks without having to remove strings and 2) To help get an accurate set up matching the string height to the neck radius. The latter gives you a perfect curve.

I am relatively new to the world of building and setting up guitars and bought these for use at home. Takes all the guess work out of setting saddle height and made it quick and easy.

I bought these to facilitate better setups on my guitars. I do my own set-up work and this set is great to have when setting the action at the bridge. With this set, it takes the guess work out of getting the radius just right. A must have for every guitar bench.

Everything I have purchased from Stew-Mac is always excellent quality and designed to get the job done in a professional manner. If you are doing your own setup these are a must have. I purchased a American made Strat and was able to change the strings and make sure the bridge was adjusted properly using these gauges and a Stew-Mac String Gauge. Simple, but effective and made to last.

Radius gauges are one of those things that you must have if you do any of your own guitar work. I bought the "Standard" gauges and they're perfect for me. I play pretty standard lp type guitars. The ability to check radius under a strung guitar is awesome, and why would you even consider gauges that didn't have that ability? If you have ever used a piece of cardboard, credit card or plastic back in the day, these really make life easier and much more accurate. This is a really nice set that will last you a lifetime.

Very helpful when leveling frets and adjusting string height. Also found it could be fastened to the 12th fret as a spacer and it furnished a locating point for a straight edge to set the desired string cut depth in the nut.
