3M Gold Fre-Cut Sandpaper

About This Item

Our favorite papers for dry sanding. They last longer! The premium aluminum oxide abrasive cuts fast and resists clogging, for better efficiency.

Treated to help prevent "fisheyes" (cratering) in waterbase finishes. These papers last longer—we use them in our own shops.

Sold individually in 9" x 11" (23cm x 28cm) sheets.

These papers are graded on the "P-scale," indicating a truly uniform cutting surface (read about abrasive grading scales in our Finishing Step-by-Step book).

Here's how we use these abrasives in our own instrument shops:
"After spraying the build coats on my guitar finishes, I sand with 320 grit Fre-Cut, then spray and sand again. Then I move on to 400, 600, and 800 grit. Don't skip grits! Using all the grits makes the work easier for each sheet, and they last a lot longer."
Todd Sams, StewMac Production Manager and builder of Sams guitars

does exactly what it says, cuts uniformly, minimal loading, outlasts anything else I have tried. I use it dry and the results are better than wet sanding w/o the mess...

The best most important sandpaper in the shop. I use it every day. Another high quality product you can count on.

Expensive sandpaper

Never, ever, use cheap sandpaper from the hardware store. This 3M paper is worth it's weight in platinum by comparison. It cuts better, it lasts longer and for comparible grits leaves a smoother finish.

Better Than I expected

By
(Customer's Reviews)

I ordered this sand paper for the finishing process of a guitar kit I am building. None of my local stores sell this product (fine grit) so I was pleased to find it at Stewart-MacDonald. I expected it to perform like sand paper that I had around the house and have used in the past. The old stuff would load up (clog) quickly causing me to discard sheet after sheet. It also wore done quickly. The 3M paper I ordered was easy to "clear" by tapping on it and the best part, is that it seems to last a lot longer. I'm extremely satisfied with my purchase and will be repeating my order.

150 Grit staining problem

By
(Customer's Reviews)

The last batch of 150 grit I received leaves a decidedly ugly and unpleasant yellow stain on whatever you are sanding- it can be troublesome to remove from spruce ( causing me to scape off a top finish to correct.) I know this is not StewMac's fault but the supplier appears to be having some QC issues. All the other grits are great ( I use them extensively) and I have never had a similar problem with any of them.

The 3M Gold will cut/remove more, outlast, and save you time and money over any other. Don't waste your money on any other sandpaper, believe me, I have learned the hard way. Dale Latimer, Pickup/Amp Builder

Best sandpaper around.

I use 400 to 800 grit for dry leveling my topcoats. They don't clog and last a long time.

By far the best sandpaper for working with lacquer.
