Nut and Saddle Sander

About This Item

Perfectly square nuts and saddles in seconds
For solid contact and good tone, the bottom of a nut or saddle must be squared up. This "vise on wheels" is the fastest, surest way to do this.

Solves the tone trouble caused by poor fit
Hand-sanding a nut or saddle, it's hard not to tilt it one direction or the other. The result is a poor fit in the slot—always a tone problem, but especially with undersaddle pickups.

The Nut and Saddle Sander holds the nut or saddle perfectly vertical while you roll it over sandpaper on a flat surface. Adjustment screws set the amount you want to remove, and in moments the piece is squared up and truly flat.

"This takes the guesswork out of squaring up for a perfect fit. More accurate and faster, a win-win!"
—Matt Brooker, guitar repairman and StewMac tech advisor

  • Aluminum body with steel ball bearing rollers
  • Works with any nut/saddle material up to 3-1/4" x 3/8" (82mm x 10mm)

Watch our videos: Erick Coleman shows how he uses this tool. Roberto Fontanot, inventor of the Nut and Saddle Sander, demonstrates from his shop in Italy.

How to use the Nut and Saddle Sander
  • Use Stikit sandpaper on a flat surface.
  • Tighten the nut or saddle in the spring-loaded jaw. To hold a nut, remove the inner spring tensioner.
  • There are two sets of holes for the height adjusters: close for nuts, wide for saddles.
  • Each mark on the height-adjusters equals approximately one tenth of a millimeter.
  • When the wheels start turning, you’ve reached your preset height, and milled the nut or saddle flat.

The Nut & Saddle Sander is created by Roberto Fontanot of Heart Sound, an Italian company specializing in acoustic amplification. Roberto has worked with leading artists including Tommy Emmanuel and Steve Vai, and is now in charge of Research and Development at Eko Guitars.

I Can't Believe It

I am not a luthier. I work on my own guitars. For years I have adjusted saddle heights and carved nuts by hand. Always with great mashing of the teeth. Sometimes redoing them 3 or 4 times. This little machine is like a miracle. If you do some precise measuring, it will give a precise product. I have replaced two nuts and a saddle since I bought it. They are perfect. THIS SANDER IS WORTH EVERY NICKEL YOU SPEND ON IT.

What a great idea, wish I'd have thought of it first!

In my shop I lower the action on numerous guitars and this little device makes for quick work of this job. The fact that it does the nut and the saddle makes for a fantastic tool. KASA Guitar, Atlanta, GA.

Exceeds my high expectations!!

I thought this was an expensive solution to a non-existent problem but after 25 years of not wholly satisfactory and repeatable methods for squaring up saddles and nuts quickly and accurately every time, I thought "what do I have to lose?". I'm glad I spent the money. I used this tool 4 times in 2 days and am completely sold! It's very fast (less than a minute typically from start to finish) and very, very accurate. Beats the heck out of hand filing, or gripping a saddle by my fingertips over a running belt sander! For best results, take your measurements against the fixed side of the tool, not the adjustable jaw. Also, lay down 2 strips of Stickit 10-12" long. This keeps you from rolling the tool off the edge of the Stickit when working from side to side. Great offering from Stew Mac!!

I pondered for a long time about buying this tool. The expense kept me pondering.
Finally I decided to bite the bullet and am glad I did.

COOL TOOL

A very cool tool. Love it. Great time saver -- especially with the never ending stream of instruments that come through which are improperly set up.

Perfection is finally quick and easy

The first time I used this was on a saddle replacement for a Martin D-28. What usually takes 45 minutes took me less than 15, and it took all the guess work out. It's pricy, but will more than pay for itself over a short few months of work. I love this tool!

Not the best first impression.  But I'm still holding out that it does the job well.

I'm still looking forward to using this tool. However, my out of the box impression was less than stellar. Especially for the price. No instructions. One video states mark increments are 1/64", the other and the site description state 0.10mm. Which is it? Then I was kind of surprised at how loose the height adjusters were in the body, but ok. And then to my surprise the knurled end with an index notch on the height adjuster, probably the most critical component in my opinion, when backed off, just twisted right off. Good thing I wasn't doing anything critical or counting on it for accuracy at the time. So yeah, I check my settings before I start sanding, but for the price of this thing, I expected a little more craftsmanship and not something that would fall apart in my hands before It even got used on real material.

Thanks,

Brad Barnette
