Nut Slotting Gauge

About This Item

A revolution in guitar setup! Precisely measures string heights, so you can cut accurate nut slots for consistent playability.

This device will revolutionize the way you set up a guitar.
The Nut Slotting Gauge quickly and precisely measures string heights over the first fret. When filing nut slot depths, you see your results more accurately than ever before. No more guesswork or "eyeballing" the string heights, and no more searching for elusive combinations of feeler gauges. You can custom-tailor the playability with consistent, repeatable results.

At last! A precision tool for establishing string heights!

The Nut Slotting Gauge was designed by Don MacRostie here in our R & D shop. It features an easy to read dial indicator with adjustable zero point, and it's super accurate to .001". The machined brass base fits over the strings to rest on the fingerboard, and it works with most acoustic and electric guitars, mandolins and banjos. A larger brass base is machined to fit bass string spacings. Both have gently arched bottoms to follow most any fretboard radius. Instructions are included.

The Nut Slotting Gauge is included in this money-saving set: Nut Slotting Gauge and Neck Relief Gauge Set

Putting the new Nut Slotting Gauge to work on a "burn victim" guitar

Dan Erlewine shows a before and after of a 1958 Gibson that's (barely) survived a house fire. It needs a new nut, and he's using the Nut Slotting Gauge to get it right the first time.

A must have!

I’m amazed how much better my guitars play with the nut slot heights dialled in to the thou of an inch. I’ll never slot a nut again without it!
Thank you again Stewmac!!

Precise and that's all.

We've try it at the shop a few weeks ago. We don't use it the way stewMac explain, we prefer to check with the dial the exact height of the 1st fret. Then, we install the gauges that determine the height of the bottom of the nut, and when shaped, the gauge that determine the proof of the slots. Big time and quality saver! The process is written and used even by our new apprentices with no failure.

Nut slotting gauge

I've been using this for years, but always thought the base curve for the fretboard should be in the other direction. Instead of the gauge on the shorter side of the base, I felt it should be on the taller side. IMHO

Works great!

My first acoustic build from several years ago never played quite right. I made a new nut and usually use the half pencil idea for general shaping and feeler gauges against the nut to file the slots. This is so much better idea and you can dial the slots to perfection. The amazing thing to me was how close to perfect intonation you can get, especially in the first few frets! I highly recommend it!

Must have actually ....

I can't believe I used feeler gauges for years ... Or business cards to measure string height off my frets (for any segment) of a set up .... Especially considering modest price, this tool is no brainier, makes for accurate nut filing depths crazy nice and you get .010, .015, .020" over first fret with ease. ONLY reason I gave 4 vs 5 stars is the quality of dial gauge - definitely low bid component (but keeps it affordable as a unit) Resetting the scale to zero on each string, rotating the face is rough and tight in different spots, even with the set screw loosened all the way. Minor, but I'd pay more ($60?) for a tool with better quality gauge. I also work in metal shop building race cars and have many dial gauges, more costly, yet super accurate, much easier to us. That said, I'd still highly recommend this tool.
