Gauged Nut Slotting Files for Bass

About This Item

Our tempered edge-cut nut files produce round-bottom slots, to ensure that the strings seat properly in the nut without buzzing.

Each chrome-alloy steel file has twin 4" cutting edges. Among our most popular tools, these professional files help you get the job done quickly and correctly.

TIP: A nut file can be rocked back and forth while cutting, to form a slightly wider slot when necessary.

What files do I need?
Choose nut slotting files that are the same size or no more that a few thousands larger than your individual string gauges. A smaller file can also be rocked side-to-side to widen a slot to the desired size. For example, you can cut a .043" slot with a .042" file by moving it around a bit.

Wow! Fast, accurate, and precise.

I'm a novice builder with only about 10 builds under my belt, and I tried other files before. Yes, they worked but these files were precise and extremely fast. I filed to a gnat's rump hair the nuts on two of my guitar builds (from kits) and I was amazed at how quick and perfect they worked. I also had built a mandolin and had never really set it up properly as it was "okay". I sat in front of the tv and flat filed my neck ever so slightly, dressed the high frets and cleaned them up and, filed the nut on all 8 strings. My goodness, it was fast and slick and within two episodes of the show my wife makes me watch, I had a bullet proof mandolin with closer tolerances than on my Flatiron Mandolin.

Glad to have these bass nut files

Files work great to get close but still require work after files to get clean sound. Bottom of guaged files are not totally round so using the actual bass string as a file with a cork for pressure over the nut was unavoidable to fine tune the slot. Still way better and faster results with these files.

I need this for my bench as I have been repairing more bases as of late. These files have worked well and are well-made. I would recommend them to someone who is starting out.

Nothing but the best

Compared these to my Japanese files - smoother and less aggressive with a very nice bottom curve (almost sounds like a fine wine). Great feel and very predictable. Worth the cost, glad I got them!

Nut Slotting Files

I got an unusual request to make a nut for a 5 string bass, strung with a high B, rather than low. I used the black tusq nut and the wonderful nut files. The files cut through like butter. In not time flat, the job was done!

Great files. Anyone who's had to make .105 guage or greater with a .060 file is just spoiled when it comes to these guys. Good clean accurate cuts and they will last you just about forever!

Bass Nut Files

By

I have a P bass that was uncomfortable to play around the first few frets. I took it to the local repair shop and it took them about 2 weeks to get around to looking at it. When I got it back it was an improvement but still not good. I saw a good video on how to set up a P bass so I bought the bass nut files from Stewmac and finished the job off myself. That bass is now a pleasure to play. Something all bass players should have.

Great files to have around your shop, I nearly have a full set of them now along with the double edge files. Quality tools from a quality vendor!
