Luthier's Digital Caliper

About This Item

Our Luthier's Digital Caliper combines precision, ease of use, versatility and an attractive price, but its usefulness for fret work makes it special.

Customized for fretwork!
We added a custom jaw notch for accurately measuring fretwire crown height (the height above the fretboard). This is essential for comparing new wire to original wire. And thanks to a great idea by repairman Frank Ford, we've also added a notch on the depth gauge to measure fret height on the instrument—a real time saver.

  • Measures fret height before AND after fret installation
  • Accurate readouts in inches, millimeters, or fractions
  • A must for all precision guitar work

Handy for lots of other measuring jobs in the shop—nuts, saddles, tuners, tool setups and more—this caliper has long-life stainless steel jaws. Featuring LCD digital readouts in inches, millimeters or fractions, it measures outside, inside and depth dimensions up to 6" (154mm), with super-accurate .0005" (.01mm) resolution. The jaws can be locked at any position.

CR2032 battery and durable plastic storage case included.

Not Happy

Compared to the one purchased 8-10 years ago this one is flimsy and cheap. Would have payed more for the quality of the previous one. The slot at the bottom for measuring fret height is only .075" so if you are measuring anything taller you can't use these calipers.

For years I had an English calipers and everyday I found myself needing to go from English to metric or metric to English units. With this calipers it is all done with the touch of button. High precision and a high quality instrument.

You need this tool!

What did I do without the luthier caliper? I cannot believe how often I reach for this tool now that I have it. My only complaint is that the case is difficult to open. It could be the arthritis in my hands. Definitely not a reason not to buy this tool. It's easy to use, easy to read and is dead on accurate. A must for any guitar workbench.

Great tool. Accurate.

Accurate and cool features for measuring frets. A bit pricy but I am satisfied. I have to lock the jaws with its screw whenever I turn it off because it turns on esaily when unlocked (shortening the life of the battery). Plastic parts feel like weak but work fine.

Very good but battery life is too short.

In general I think this is a fine product, however I think there are some issues with the electronics. I had to have my first on replaced due to problems with the battery compartment; unit would not stay on or constantly reset itself. Several other unit at school were having issues so I think it was just a bad run or job lot, the tool itself is great!

I like these but the battery life on my set is not great! I like the stew mac extra features but the battery life is low and I change it far too often!

The simple features that are added to this tool make fretwork and nutwork so much easier. The slots for measuring fretwire on/off the fretboard ... simple yet verry effective!

Accurate but some design flaws

I've found them to be pretty accurate. Much better at reading string sizes than dial calipers. However, they feel really cheap for what you pay (no tool should have delicate plastic parts), and the auto turn on feature is terrible. You have to be so careful when putting them down because it will turn itself on and drain the battery. I'm not sure why you would need calipers to automatically turn on when you begin to slide them open. You should be able to turn this feature off. As far as I know, you can't.

is a very useful and good quality, the only fault I could find is that with the slightest movement of the head so it is very difficult to move it in its box without turning on automatically and runs on battery ....
