StewMac Shop Rule

About This Item

6-inch precision steel rule for instrument work
The most-used ruler in every shop just got better! We added a center-finder, and vertical end scales to this durable, easy-to-read tool.

Satin chrome steel with sharp black etchings reads well even in poor light. Accepts pencil marks nicely, too.

The inch marks are in 16ths, 32nds and 64ths—for fast readings or extreme precision.

Centering rule
With zero at the center, this rule extends left and right to locate the center of a neck or bridge saddle.

Vertical end rules
On each end are small vertical rulers (1/32" increments). Useful for measuring saddles, nut and pickup heights.

Metric version
Same features as our inch ruler, with 0.5mm, 1mm, and 1cm increments.

Size: 6" x 3/4" (152mm x 19mm)

This little rule is magical! It helps me quickly find the center point. No more fussing with calipers for this job.

Great idea, not well executed

Having a ruler with a 0 center is handy, but this one is confusing by design and as a result I rarely reach for it...
It's 153mm long, weird. the 0 in the center does not correspond to any mark on the opposite side of the ruler so you can't use it to quickly get a (roughly) square mark out. The marking on the ends are in the way and only needed at one end anyway.
I seem to be constantly flipping and rotating it in order to get the scale i want to use.
If it were 180mm long (more useful when making bridge's), centered square and designed to be more clear in layout I'd give it 5 stars

I wanted a 6" ruler for my shop and went to Woodcraft, and was blown away by the price. Logged onto Stewmac and found this one for a price I was happy to pay

Shop Rule

A very sturdy rule and obviously very accurately marked and the manufacturing is absolutely top notch. Very nice for centering measurements. My quibbles: I wish it had both metric and imperial scales on the same rule. Perhaps metric on one side and imperial on the other? I use both systems sometimes depending on the situation. My other quibble is more of a warning: The ends of these rules are extremely sharp (as they have to be to be so accurate) and present an extreme scratch hazard to your work and one of these babies could create a lot of work in a hurry or even ruin a piece of wood so be careful around tender wood. I wish it was just a little lighter and not so thick. Otherwise the thing is a real precision instrument.

more than just another ruler

I needed a smaller ruler for some of my work and have been very impressed with the many varid functions of a "simple" ruler. The centering scale is my favorite. I also really like the scales on the end width. A very impressive tool
