Pot Cleaning Cap

About This Item

The easiest way to clean noisy control pots, without extracting them from a guitar, amp, or stomp-box!

Works for rotary switches and Gibson Varitone switches, too. The cap directs your cleaner right where it's needed, inside the pot housing on the contacts around the shaft. No mess!

"An absolute must for vintage F-hole instruments. Every guitar shop needs to have at least one."
—John Brown, Brown Guitar Factory

Simply remove the control knob, and screw the Pot Cleaning Cap on the shaft. An access hole guides your spray cleaner extension tube directly to the pot shaft. The cleaner flows down the shaft to where it's needed on the contacts inside the pot. A hole in the top of the cap lets you turn a split pot shaft with a screwdriver for thorough coverage.

Works with 3/8 x 32-thread, made in USA potentiometers: CTS, Allen-Bradley, Bourns, CentraLab, Clarostat, and others. It's not compatible with imported or metric-thread control pots (like Alpha).

Pot Cleaning Cap is made from precision machined stainless steel.

We recommend DeoxIT Pot & Switch Cleaner.

TIP: Aerosol contact cleaners can spray cold, and can potentially crack a guitar's finish. Always protect the finish with a cloth when cleaning pots and switches.

StewMac pot cleaning cap - functional but messy

By

Verified Buyer

I used the StewMac pot cleaning cap to clean noisy scratchy pots on several amps. The cap works as described and is easier than taking apart the amp to get to the pots. The pots are nice and quiet now. However, the cleaning cap is very messy. Even with the shortest burst from the Deoxit can, fluid sprays back from the hole in the cap and from underneath the cap (where it makes contact with the pot.) I wrapped a rag around the pot stem and cleaning cap which helped keep the mess minimized and the spray out of my face - recommend you wear safety glasses when using the cleaning cap.

Hmmm.

Well this is a great idea in theory. However as one reviewer wrote the tube for the DeToxit is too large to fit the cleaning cap. I tried this process on an old Hagstrom Swede that I bought a couple of years ago and with mixed success. the De Toxit is great stuff but so is any contact cleaner. The cap is specific to one thread and therefore useless on any others. Make sure of your thread size before ordering or you may have a useless piece of metal. Perhaps Stewmac could offer a kit of common post sizes with appropriate threads and then this would be the bomb! Also a matching tube on the DeToxit is an oversight that needs correcting.

Not working for me.

I see rave reviews here so am I doing something wrong? The cap fit on my pots but the straw on the Deoxit is twice as big as the hole in the cap. The picture shows the straw going into the cap which is not possible. Spray goes all over with much wasted.

Pot Cleaning Cap

This item did exactly what it should do for unsealed pots. I have a vintage Fender Dual Showman of 60's vintage. I thought I was going to have to replace the pots but this gizmo did the job. Well done designer of said gizmo. Make sure to use the DeoxitD5 with the pot cleaning cap. it is the best! Very smart and resourceful design.

Works great ( for pots with 3/8 bushings)

By

Works great for any pots with 3/8 thread bushings so if you try this on any guitar with the cheaper pots it won't work. Wish they would make one of these for the metric pots.

Handy for thin line guitars and arch tops .

Handy for those times you don't want to charge 180 bucks to spray pots.

Pot cleaning cap

I like the idea of this device. I had to remove the nuts from the pots to screw it on. The cleaner shot out of the opening of the top all over the guitar but it did clean the pots. I will have to remember to put a finger over the opening and wear goggles next time. You can also catch a spider and zap it with bug spray.

Useless

Doesn't work. Period. Hole is to big and lets all the lubricant spray back in your face. This is a sorry tool.

Response from StewMac

Thanks for your review. It sounds like this may have not been used on the correct 3/8 x 32-thread pot, causing the issue you have described. You are welcome to return this for a refund or exchange at any time.

Cleaned my pots

By

The key word here is, directs the cleaner onto the pot shaft for a better penetration. Use common sense and know that their is always a spill over so as they suggest have the finish covered. This is a major time saver, and gives me no excuse not to have all my pots in perfect quiet working order. Thanks for another great product.

Is it Worth $20? You bet it is!!!

I have a vintage Jim Kelley 80's Tube guitar amp that I have owned since 2000. It has always had noise. I just accepted it as the price for the awesome sound when the pots were set and hoped it did not crackle during a performance. After I used the Pot Cleaning Cap all of the pots now have no noise at all, ever and my baby has never been so quiet! Great Job!!
