Precision Router Base

About This Item

A more stable way to support your Dremel. Our sturdy, compact base is the best way to hold a Dremel for freehand routing, inlaying, widening fret slots and more.

Made of machined steel, brass and aluminum, it features precision cutting depth adjustment with large thumbwheels to eliminate guesswork.

Designed especially for stringed instrument work.
  • Excellent control
  • Easy installation
  • Accurate freehand routing
Sturdy, compact, and adjustable.
Each turn of the large knurled thumbwheels adjusts your Dremel's cutting depth by .035" (.889mm). You can rout an inlay cavity that's precisely compensated for the thickness of the pearl and glue, for less sanding later.

Tall twin handles give you excellent control for freehand routing, and you get a good view of your work. There's even a built-in nozzle for attaching a mini air pump to continuously blow away the dust—you'll rout inlay cavities more precisely, for a better fit requiring less filler.

And here's a tip from Dan Erlewine: clamp the Dremel and router base upside-down on your workbench, and use the bottom of the router base as a mini drum sander, as Dan Erlewine did for a Gibson L-1 archtop bridge in this issue of our Trade Secrets Newsletter.

Installation is easy.
Simply unscrew the threaded plastic collar on the nose of the Dremel, and screw on the Precision Router Base. Its 3/4-12 thread fits:
Dremel 100, Dremel 4000, 400XPR, Professional, MultiPro and most corded models made since 1986
Black & Decker Wizard and RTX
Our Foredom custom handpiece

This router base is a quality item, and works perfectly!

well built and easy to become acustom to

I've purchased and return 2 others due to the awkwardness of setting depth of cut. Found it easier to maintain parallel axis. Appreciate the "blow hole" and visibility , smooth operation of thumb screws, my only wish it were punched out to accommodate the flex shaft

Dandy little tool!

I'm new to inlay work, but I recently purchased the Stew-mac Precision Router Base and can't imagine how one could ever do inlay without it. It is a dandy little tool that gives you tremendous accuracy and control when cutting inlays. One of the best bangs for the buck amongst all my woodworking tools. I love it!

Essential tool for inlaying/purfling, but some issues

By

1. The tiny hex socket screws holding the legs to the plate sometimes come loose. Might have to use thread lock. 2. the air hose tube is too large for aquarium pump hose, and doesn't work well anyway for tiny channel inlaying. Better is clamp a shopvac outlet close to the router's throat. 3 the knurled nuts are kinda tricky and tend to loosen as well. Range of depths could be better. Still it's an essential tool for us and I doubt the new one is any improvement.

Router base worked great

Only needed a couple practice runs and then inlaid insignia and emblem. Easy to adjust with precision. Watch the right hand knob as it can push the alignment out- gently.

Excellent router base

So simple, it really is. The design is strait forward and the fact that you can use a foredom rotary tool with the additional foredom hanpiece is great. With the foredom handpiece just screwing right in, not like those clamp on afterthoughts, it makes it a solid unit that stays true and tight. The price is great too! The foredom handpiece is on par with what they would normally cost and yet it’s precision machined specifically for this base. That means you never have to take it out of the base for other applications with your foredom rotary tool just leave it in the base and pop a new hanpiece on and away you go. Brilliant!

Much better than dremel’s offering

Precision instrument that far surpasses the cheap plastic one from dremel, which is relatively crude. I don’t think dremel sells bits short enough to rout out inlays or other tasks that require a shallow depth so you must buy stewmacks excellent bits.

Inlay router works much better than other (plastic) brands

This router base is a very handy way to prepare a surface for inlay. Much better than old methods I have tried. Machined from sturdy metal, this does not fall apart with the first use like some plastic brands I have used.
