Three-in-one Fret File

About This Item

Designed by master luthier Michael Gurian.

When we're asked to recommend just one fret file, it's gotta be the 3-in-1. It's been popular since Michael Gurian designed it over 20 years ago. The angle in the shaft lifts the handle up away from the guitar, protecting the top. Since it has 3 interchangeable cutters it works for all fret widths, from basses to mandolins.

Steel shank, wooden handle. Overall length is 7" (178mm).
Each burr is 1-7/8" (47.63mm) long.

Replacement burrs sold separately.

Works on stainless frets, too!
All of our tools are suitable for use on stainless-steel fretwire, with the exception of our Fret Tang Nippers. Modern stainless-steel fretwire is known to be harder than the traditional nickel-silver blends, but our own shop experience indicates the wire does not cause premature wear of files or sandpapers.

Works well for most fret sizes

All in all, its a very useful tool, my only complaint was its compatibility with all fret sizes, I found that none of the included burrs worked perfectly to crown smaller fret sizes.

Great muliti tool

Took me a few minutes to get the feel for the cutter but once I did, it makes rounding the fret tops easy.

Three for the price of one!

Why buy three different files for small, medium and large frets when you can get an ergonomic handle with three interchangeable cutters. It made re-rounding the fret tops a breeze.

3rd time is a charm

I just completed my 3rd fret crowing using this tool. I have no bad words for this lil item. It left a perfect crown that required minimum polishing. I think everyone should have one in their arsenal of fretting tools.

3 in 1 fret file.

A bit too aggressive and chatters on the frets; not smooth enough for my likes; I'm returning this for a refund.

Expected more

I have no doubt this tool will work as-described, however I went for the extra expense of buying from Stew-Mac because I thought I'd be getting the best possible quality in a tool and not the cheap imitations one sees for less money online. Turns out this is exactly the same as those cheap ones, only it costs more. The wooden handle is un-sanded and unfinished; what would a quick sand and a coat of lacquer add to the cost? The metal parts are similarly unfinished with sharp-ish edges and the whole tool looks as though it was churned out in some Chinese factory by people who coudln't care less about the end-user's experience.
Reviewers claiming 'great quality' must have received a different tool than the one I was sent.

The most obvious issue (aside from the scratchy-to-hold-handle) is the channels in the cutting heads are not machined square to the line of the tool, that is, they are cut at a slight angle, meaning I'll have to hold the tool slightly off-center to cut straight down the fret; not good for a supposedly precision tool. With a bit of effort on my part this will be a nicely-finished and usable tool for my shop, (though I can do nothing about the poorly-machined file slots) but I expect more from the 'leaders' in luthier tools. I guess every business is out to make money but reputation will suffer if quality is not maintained. There is nothing wrong with Chinese-made, but quality control sometimes leaves a lot to be desired and I'd be embarrassed if I sold a tool like this to one of my customers. It won't prevent me from buying from Stew-Mac in the future, but I'll be a bit more careful next time.

Wouldn't buy again!

Sizes in the description are misleading. Measurements aren't the cutting area but the overall size of the stone… So after sending the small back and getting the medium. it was still to small for my frets… but the real problem is the rough cut it leaves.. ended up just buying another neck for $110 which worked out great.. Probably would have to spend more to get a decent fret shaping tool. I don't do it enough to spend that kind of money..

after working with diamond files these feel a bit strange. but these work great for removing alot of material. the offset handle is nice. good deal.
