About This Item

.100" to .110" width

Our bulk fretwire is supplied in convenient clear storage tubes, to keep your wire organized and your workbench uncluttered. You'll save 50% or more when you order fretwire by the pound.

Instrument makers and repair shops rely on us for the highest quality 18% nickel-silver fretwire. We supply our fretwire in 2-foot straight lengths. Order 6 feet for a complete guitar or bass fret job, and 4 feet for a mandolin, banjo or ukulele.

Our fretwire is sized to fit a 0.023" (0.58mm) fret slot width.

Fretwire is made in a variety of crown heights. Note that after the frets are installed and leveled, they can lose from .004" to .010" in height. High fretwire has a crown height of .045" or more. It may offer more note sustain due to its slightly greater mass, and more fret dressings are possible between refrettings. Low fretwire is often useful for partial refret jobs.

I average about 3 fret jobs a week, for about 12 years now. Stewmac fret wire has done about 98% of those jobs without a single complaint. I carry most of what they offer.

I got it to refret my 80's HM Strat and now it reminds me of when it was new, but better because I got to hand roll the ends. Definitely going to get more - maybe for my L6. Thanks, Dave

Nice wire....but......

I like this wire. I use the stewmac fret slotting table saw template, blade etc. BUT...none of the wire works with the .023 slot table saw blade. They advertise that the saw blade is designed for all their wire. The blade is exact at .023 as I can tell. The wire varies from order to order. Too tight and too many back bows due to fret compression. I had to buy their " fret barber" to trim the tang teeth to make them fit without bowing the neck backwards. You have to experiment. Not what I expected to have to do...spending more money for tools when they plainly advertise that the blade was made special for their wire. I'll still use their parts since I'm use to it. Less expensive than other options, I guess.

Response from StewMac

Hi William, thanks for your review. You're definitely right that some experimentation is needed to dial in the right amount of fret compression on a neck. In addition to the slot width and the fret tang and barb diameter, the type of wood, truss rod, and construction technique all come into play. One good trick to counteract the compression of snug fitting frets and avoid backbow is to build upbow into the neck while gluing on the fretboard. Excellent for bending!

This wire is great for bending strings. I rebuilt a 1960s teisco and refretted with this and turned it into a shredder!! I changed to Wilkinson pups and a bunch of smoothed factory parts.

This fret wire was an almost perfect match for a refret in a 1968 Gibson EB-2D bass.
