About This Item

.080" to .095"
Medium widths are the most popular (used extensively by Martin, Fender and Gibson). #0148 Medium is our best seller.

Order fretwire by the pound for tidy savings!
Our bulk fretwire is supplied in convenient clear storage tubes, to keep your wire organized and your workbench uncluttered. You'll save 50% or more when you order fretwire by the pound.

Instrument makers and repair shops rely on us for the highest quality 18% nickel-silver fretwire. We supply our fretwire in 2-foot straight lengths. Order 6 feet for a complete guitar or bass fret job, and 4 feet for a mandolin, banjo or ukulele.

Our fretwire is sized to fit a 0.023" (0.58mm) fret slot width.

Fretwire is made in a variety of crown heights. Note that after the frets are installed and leveled, they can lose from .004" to .010" in height. High fretwire has a crown height of .045" or more. It may offer more note sustain due to its slightly greater mass, and more fret dressings are possible between refrettings. Low fretwire is often useful for partial refret jobs.

It's good quality wire, but  often times I need sizes Stewmac just does not offer.

I wish Stewmac sold true Martin fretwire, in all sizes, but they just don't, and that leaves the company every luthier worth anything should already know about, and then there are other sizes they simply don't have for Gibson Les Paul Customs (1950s) and pre 1970, (68,79,70), and into the 1980s, or Epiphone Kalamazoo, and many others. Martin frets can have a multitude of tang widths which are used to make fine adjustments to the necks with no truss rods. If that fails to work I have to reglue the fingerboard then dial in the rest using fret wire tang widths, and that means a trip to another supplier. We love Stewmac's fast shipping, customer service and return policies, but as a competitive shop, I have to use other suppliers, for items Stewmac does not have, or items I can buy at wholesale prices in bulk. I sure miss the customer service, but if it won't work one must do what one must do. The quality of the wire and the way Stewmac ships the wire are both great. It just does not cover all my needs all the time. If I can buy wire .001 difference and it matches what I need, that is the route we will take to keep things 100% original.

0148 worked great

Refretted a 1969 D35 with it. Made a press for 16-20, but drove the rest in. Didn't have to file anything but the ends. Guitar played perfectly. This was my 3rd fret job with stewmac wire. I prefer stainless steel, but when working on the old boxes, this fretwire is a close match for the original.

I use StewMac medium medium fretwire for all my builds - electric guitars, acoustic guitars, and ukuleles. It's a good middle of the road compromise so I only have to stock one size. Thanks StewMac!

Amazing resource

Have been making dulcimer variants for 40+ years as a hobbyist. When I asked around at a few guitar shops for parts and supplies in my new neck of the woods, Maine, they each said without hesitation, "StewMac." I see why: helpful, knowledgeable, fast, fair price, and all kinds of goodies I wish I'd known about long ago... and I'm not usually enthusiastic about "suppliers."

Easy to put in, but not enough.

I installed it and it really worked well. I even discovered that I needed to do no leveling! My only problem was 2 feet wasn't enough to fill all the slots. I should have ordered twice as much.
