Fret Beveling File

About This Item

Low-friction files for fret ends.
Sold individually or SAVE when you buy the set of both files.

The Fret Beveling File is the fast, accurate way to put a uniform 35° bevel on fret ends after installing new frets. With a quick, smooth motion, this file angles the fret ends and makes them ready for fret dressing and polishing. Available in either 3-3/4" or 7-1/2" filing lengths.

This 1-1/2" x 1-3/4" block (two lengths are available) holds a removable fine-tooth flat file at the proper 35° angle to bevel all the fret ends along the edge of the fingerboard. The block is made of low-friction material for smooth, easy filing. The 3-3/4" model is for short fingerboards (mandolins, for example), and for spot-filing partial refrets. It's also useful for working on used instruments with necks that aren't straight.

Works on stainless frets, too!
All of our tools are suitable for use on stainless-steel fretwire, with the exception of our Fret Tang Nippers. Modern stainless-steel fretwire is known to be harder than the traditional nickel-silver blends, but our own shop experience indicates the wire does not cause premature wear of files or sandpapers.

One of the essentials.

I'm closing in on 40 guitar builds and this is one of the standard tools in my shop that is used on every guitar. If you use it carefully and learn its nuances, it's the only tool you will have to use for fret end dressing. I take the frets to the point where there's just a hair of removal and a bevel placed on the fretboard and that's it. No additional dressing is required. Simple in its design, reliable in the consistent work it does...cant ask for anything more in a tool.

Great Tool One Caveat

This is an excellent file that cuts perfect bevels. The only issue I have with it is the metal powder from the frets easily embeds in the plastic block making it abrasive. This is really only a problem if you try to use it to clean up the ends of finished frets.I use it in a vertical orientation so that gravity pulls powder away from the block rather than keeping it under it. The file can be removed from the block and used to clean up ends without marring the finish.

Cheap guitars, old guitars and guitars that spend their lives in Colorado. Fret ends are a real issue. I was willing to try anything. Stewmac's Fret Beveling File is quick, accurate and surprisingly easy to use! The guitars now play much more comfortable and feel as though I took it to a pro. Sorry pros.

I purchased this to achieve more uniform bevels.

This seems like a cool little tool (I got the small one to save money.) A little more controllable than a leveling or mill file. I have seen online video of a homemade equivalent that added a second bearing surface providing a 90 degree cut for flushing fret ends, that would be a very desirable addition. How about a 30 degree angle? Can't have everything in one tool but the utility of this device could be expanded, I'm thinkin'.

Indispensible fret tool

I have used this fret beveling file since the beginning of my guitar building. It is excellent. It keeps the correct angle and does not mar the frets which are destined for finishing and polishing. I tried to angle the fret end by hand several times, but it was never consistent. This file produces a consistent job. Excellent buy.

Don't forget that the craftsmen/women on Stew-mac videos are professionals!! This tool can/will get away from you until you learn to use it and cause mayhem to your frets! Please practice on a cheap guitar first. Once you have your technique dialed in, the system works fine.
