Fret Saw

About This Item

Our Fret Slotting Saw has a rigid brass spine, and a comfortable traditionally-turned hardwood handle with ferrule. It looks right at home on a luthier's workbench.

Sheffield steel blade.
Make no mistake: this is NOT a standard hardware megamart backsaw! We started with a blade of legendary corrosion-resistant Sheffield steel, and specified .023" width to match our fretwire. We insisted on precision pull-cut teeth, to greatly reduce blade flex and jamming in harder fingerboard woods. Lastly, we designed an easy to use, removable clear acrylic depth stop. It slides up or down, with thumbscrews to precisely set any fret slot depth.

And one more thing: this saw works seamlessly with our Fret Slotting Miter Box.

The acrylic Depth Stop can be adjusted to expose as much as 1/4" of the blade, and is removable for cutting off the ends of a blank fingerboard.

Overall length 15-1/4" (387.35mm)
Cutting length 10" (254mm)
Blade depth 1-3/4" (44.45mm)

Cut accurate 90-degree slots when you use the saw with our Fret Slotting Miter Box. Add a Fret Scale Template and you'll never miscalculate your fret positions.

Good but needs resharpening

By

I bought one of these a while ago, I have only cut a few fretboards with this one, and it didn't cut like it did anymore. Cutting a fret slot in ebony was a nightmare. Fortunately I learnt how to sharpen saws recently (there's tutorials in youtube if you are interested). I did it and... wow! It makes a lot of difference. Now it takes less than two minutes to cut each slot.

Great but needs more

This is a great quality saw. The depth stop is also very useful but I wish it could run a little deeper down to 0.050”

Every shop needs some pretty tools

Forty years ago I started slotting fretboards with a hardware store back saw. I had to stone off the set from the teeth to make the slots small enough, and I used two little C clamps to hold on the wooden slat that controled the depth of cut. It worked, sort of. With no set in the teeth saw was hard to push and tended to jump out of the slots. After a few years I moved on to the Stewmac table saw slotting system, but the ends of the slots still needed hand work after the 'boards were crowned. I just broke down and bought my second Stewmac fret saw, the first one having gone to heaven or wherever missing tools go. The saw is quick to set up, holds its setting, cuts like a laser and makes my shop look prettier and more professional. Fine tool.

Great saw, bad depth stop

The saw is sharp and high quality. As other reviewers have indicated, the depth stop cannot be set low enough for use on a radiused board. It cannot be set to cut less than 5/32".

Superior quality and great value. This is the RIGHT tool, engineered specifically for the purpose. This is a quality-built item, very well made, packaged appropriately, delivered surprisingly quick, and just a wonderful tool to hold and own. I highly recommend StewMac in general and this particular item specifically.

If you are in doubt, or on the fence about purchasing this item as opposed to some discount-tool-outlet's offering... Please do yourself a favor and just buy this tool from StewMac. You'll be glad that you did. This is the real deal and you will be pleased.

Oh, and be careful, because this saw is SHARP!

Fret saw oh fret saw

After fretting 50 or so cigar box guitars with a coping saw and having to use super glue to keep the frets in, the proper sized slot makes it so much easier. Wish I got the saw 49 guitars ago.

My First Mountain Dulcimer Build

By

I have 7 Mountain Dulcimers, can't have just one, but wanted to make a Tennessee Music Box. I had enough scrap wood laying around but did not have a saw to cut grooves thin enough for frets. I did not have any Fret Wire and did not want to use paper clips so I ordered the Fret Saw and Fret Wire from Stewart-MacDonald. I figured out the VSL I wanted and use the fret chart on their web site and I could not be any happier . Everything came out perfect. Fast service and great products.Thank you Stewart McDonald.
