Fret Saw

About This Item

Our Fret Slotting Saw has a rigid brass spine, and a comfortable traditionally-turned hardwood handle with ferrule. It looks right at home on a luthier's workbench.

Sheffield steel blade.
Make no mistake: this is NOT a standard hardware megamart backsaw! We started with a blade of legendary corrosion-resistant Sheffield steel, and specified .023" width to match our fretwire. We insisted on precision pull-cut teeth, to greatly reduce blade flex and jamming in harder fingerboard woods. Lastly, we designed an easy to use, removable clear acrylic depth stop. It slides up or down, with thumbscrews to precisely set any fret slot depth.

And one more thing: this saw works seamlessly with our Fret Slotting Miter Box.

The acrylic Depth Stop can be adjusted to expose as much as 1/4" of the blade, and is removable for cutting off the ends of a blank fingerboard.

Overall length 15-1/4" (387.35mm)
Cutting length 10" (254mm)
Blade depth 1-3/4" (44.45mm)

Cut accurate 90-degree slots when you use the saw with our Fret Slotting Miter Box. Add a Fret Scale Template and you'll never miscalculate your fret positions.

Unique saw for other than luthier work

By

I am using this saw and the SD miter box for general work in my shop. I am not a luthier but I make a lot of small intricate items like inlay banding and whatnot. Having a pull cut is really nice. My only complaint and it's not the saws fault is that it's hard to sharpen a saw with this many teeth per inch, the max I can handle myself is about 15 so this one will probably be a learning experience for me.

High quality saw plate, very nicely cut and love the back and handle, just a good tool period. The depth stop is useful for me for a number of applications like cutting the channel for a threaded rod jig etc.

Nice quality tool, cuts very clean

I purchased this as part of the combo with the miter box.

Works great, except if you're as arthritic as I am, you might prefer a "push" tooth set rather than the "pull" alignment. I know I would, or at least a right angle handle. The teeth are very aggressive, so the first few strokes are a little grabby. But the slots it makes are razor-sharp and perfect width.

I use this to clean slots on unbound boards and a single swipe works like magic!

Good but needs resharpening

I bought one of these a while ago, I have only cut a few fretboards with this one, and it didn't cut like it did anymore. Cutting a fret slot in ebony was a nightmare. Fortunately I learnt how to sharpen saws recently (there's tutorials in youtube if you are interested). I did it and... wow! It makes a lot of difference. Now it takes less than two minutes to cut each slot.

Great but needs more

This is a great quality saw. The depth stop is also very useful but I wish it could run a little deeper down to 0.050”

Every shop needs some pretty tools

Forty years ago I started slotting fretboards with a hardware store back saw. I had to stone off the set from the teeth to make the slots small enough, and I used two little C clamps to hold on the wooden slat that controled the depth of cut. It worked, sort of. With no set in the teeth saw was hard to push and tended to jump out of the slots. After a few years I moved on to the Stewmac table saw slotting system, but the ends of the slots still needed hand work after the 'boards were crowned. I just broke down and bought my second Stewmac fret saw, the first one having gone to heaven or wherever missing tools go. The saw is quick to set up, holds its setting, cuts like a laser and makes my shop look prettier and more professional. Fine tool.

Great saw, bad depth stop

The saw is sharp and high quality. As other reviewers have indicated, the depth stop cannot be set low enough for use on a radiused board. It cannot be set to cut less than 5/32".
