Refret Saw

About This Item

Clean or deepen fret slots for better fret seating!
New frets won't seat correctly until the old fret slots are clean.

Designed by fretting expert Dan Erlewine, each of these unique saws has two 3/8" blades. One cuts on the pull stroke, the other on the push. The three saws have different blade thicknesses; use them in sequence as needed to loosen packed wood dust and old glue, or to deepen shallow fret slots, even on bound fingerboards. They're better for these tasks than a standard fret saw, which won't work on a bound board and can unnecessarily widen the slots on a radiused board.

Each saw is 9-3/4" overall, with a wooden handle and two 3/8" blades.

The Refret Saw is included in this money-saving set:

Refret Saw

I've been needing this for a while. I have a mandolin I'm refretting and refinishing and this was perfect to deepen the slots a little to put in new frets. Now I need the other two sizes.

Before the first use

One thing you really want to do before the first use is to round off the sharp edges on the leading and trailing edges of the saw blades. This will greatly reduce the chances of chipping the fret slot edges.

It is a very useful tool but the blades dull very very quickly.

Great Tool

I've seen these for years and thought they were frivolous...until I had to re-fret a bound fretboard! They worked great. I bought the set. I started with the smallest and worked up until the fret fit just right.

Be absolutely positive of which size of saw you want. Too large and you'll be using glue to hold the frets.

Ingenius tool. I don't clean fret slots without these. A must have tool.

This works like it is suppose to. After using the fret saw it clean out the slots nicely and helps bring down any high spots.

Pretty Good

Does as it should, though I do find it a little hard not to hit the fret board with the other set of teeth. Imagine if you will, cutting a piece of rug with a razor, but then the razor slips and you end up cutting a piece of the rug you weren't trying to cut. That's what it's like with this saw. I think it should have just one set of teeth (so it only cuts in one direction)- I have no problem flipping the guitar around and getting it from the other side, or walking to the other side of the table.

Just Perfect!

this tool is perfect either as a slot deepener and cleaner. the double saw system is a great idea, as it makes the push and pull job super easy. i like to prep the fret slots, and i like them to be as perfect as the factory slots. this tool made it possible even on bound fretboards.
