StewMac Fret Cutter

About This Item

Spend less time filing fret ends!
This is the best tool for trimming the ends off fretwire.

A Stewart-MacDonald exclusive, our custom-made steel cutter has improved features you won't find on hardware store nippers.

The jaws are specially hardened for fret work, and they're profiled and flush-ground to cut the wire close to the fretboard. The result is a cleaner cut without pulling the wire, so you'll need less filing. Longer rubber-coated handles allow better access to the frets over a guitar body.

1" (25.4mm) jaw width, 8" (203.20mm) length.

Essential for Fretting
This item is 1 of the 7 tools included in our Essential Fretting Tool Set, a compilation of tools you'll need for the fundamentals of fret work. The set also includes our book, Fret Work Step-By-Step by Erick Coleman with Dan Erlewine.

Works on stainless frets, too!
All of our tools are suitable for use on stainless-steel fretwire, with the exception of our Fret Tang Nippers. Modern stainless-steel fretwire is known to be harder than the traditional nickel-silver blends, but our own shop experience indicates the wire does not cause premature wear of files or sandpapers.

Pretty Darn Good Cutters!

I started with a StewMac Dreadnought kit, and was doing great until it came time to trim the frets. Regular straight cutters get fairly close, but unless you really like filing frets you need these! I've moved on through cigar box guitars to classicals and other accoustics, and am on my second set, probably going for the third. The edges get dinged trying to cut that neat gold fretwire, I think, and I tried to save them but only made them into regular cutters!
These are a little pricey for someone who builds maybe 2 or 3 guitars a year. It would be nice if StewMac offered a sharpening service, or maybe came up with instructions on how to clean the jaws up to like new (at least once) for us non-machinists. Or maybe a new StewMac sharpening tool! Yeah!

There really is a difference

I have a bunch of S-M tools on my bench, but never bought the fret cutters. I got some cheapies online, and hey, how different could they be, right?

Well, I finally got a set, and wish I hadn't waited so long. I have a partially fretted neck on the bench, with jumbo stainless. I had clipped the ends with my old nippers, getting as close as I could, which isn't all that close.

I took the new cutters, and ran down up one side of the neck and down the other. I was able to get a solid chunk off every previously cut fret end. They get REAL close to the board, have a mirror smooth face, and after going through that stainless, not a mark on them.

Good upgrade

I've ground a couple of end nippers flat and they worked just ok. Left a somewhat ragged cut on the fret end. The SM fret nippers are a much better tool. Nice clean cuts. The longer handles make the cut easier, especially on evo fret wire. Well made tool. Highly recommended.

I recently cut my index finger off and found my old pliers to hard to pull. I had been looking at the Stmac pliers for some time and finally decided to try them. They are great, easy to pull closed an leave a lot less to trim.

Never written a review before, but I've gone through 2 of the stew mac fret cutters in the last 25 years and just purchased my 3rd. Great cutters, not a ton of cash, I recommend them!
