FretBender

About This Item

New quick-adjust wheel! The world's most popular fret bender, now with a new brass thumbwheel to control the radius. Simpler and faster than ever!

A great idea: Crank a length of fretwire through the FretBender, and it comes out curved and ready to install in a radiused fretboard. Get a perfect bend on enough wire for a whole guitar in just seconds.

Perfectly radiused fretwire, guaranteed
Insert the wire, turn the crank, and out it comes with a constant curvature that you'd never get by bending with pliers. Precisely radiused fretwire makes your fretwork fast, accurate, and professional. StewMac's FretBender is a valuable addition to your busy shop, we guarantee it.

New thumbwheel: the brass adjuster on top is an easy, controllable way to dial in your radius. A great addition to a product that's proven its worth since the 80s when repairman Randy Stockwell's idea inspired this tool!

The FretBender uses precision ball-bearing rollers. The heavy-duty aluminum column can be clamped in a vise, or use the pre-drilled bolt holes to mount it to your workbench.

"Bending every fret by hand takes me about 15 minutes, and I get uneven results. This tool does the job perfectly in less than a minute."
— Dan Erlewine

How it works
Your choice of fretwire will determine where to set the thumbwheel—every wire is different. Run a 6-inch test piece through the FretBender and compare it to your fretboard. Turn the wheel counterclockwise to lower the guide wheel for a tighter radius. When you have the curve you want, lock it in with the knob on top.

Start your test with flat wire, then increase as needed; you can't unbend fretwire that's too tightly curved.

Identical to a bender I was given in Bulgaria, and I don't have to go to Bulgaria to get one!

By

This is a spot on replica of the bender I was given by a fellow luthier in Bulgaria. It is about 3x the price he was charging, but he has since passed away, and we have needed to have multiple benders now, so we don't have to reset the radiuses while working on multiple instruments. OVER BEND YOUR FRETS so the tangs will push in and then out, locking them into the slots. You get a nice consistent radius with this tool, and you can screw or clamp it right to your bench. We also keep one right by the stock slots of fret wire too, so someone can prebend before they get to a folding overflow table bench. We have old hardwood folding TV tables with a removable neck rest on them, to take the overflow of guitars being worked on. Here is a 1977 Les Paul NAMM demonstrator guitar that was a gift from Kahler Bridges & Tremolos. It is being assessed and readied for a total refret. Next stop the neck tension jig. We are using the Stewmac straight edge to assess the hump where the neck meets the body, which is typical of this era Les Paul, with the short tenon.

Uniform, adjustable, reliable bends that take all the guesswork of doing it by hand. A very useful addition to my shop.

Takes the guess work out of bending

I have only just started fretting, but the three necks I have done I had to bend by hand. The process was less than ideal and the results variable.
This tool is solid, easily adjustable and gives precise control over the bend. Results are dependable and exact, allowing for exact radius matching frets or slightly overbent to allow for a little extra bend to help seating into the fret board.
A well made tool, certainly worth the expenditure if you are doing or planning to do multiple builds.

This tool is second to none when it comes to fret bending. The addition of the thumb wheel makes adjusting the radius easy, and precise. If you do fret work, you MUST have it.

Quick and easy to use. I was a little concerned that the ends of the wire would not be consistent with the rest, not an issue! Smooth and consistent bend from end to end.

This tool has one function but it does its job flawlessly. I went with out one of these for years and I have no idea how. My fretwork has improved significantly. It goes to show that the right tool for the job is indispensable.
