JLD Bridge Doctor

About This Item

• Enhances volume
• Flattens 'bellied' soundboards

A unique solution to a common bridge problem, this spruce device attaches beneath a guitar bridge. An adjustable spruce "pressure post" rests against the tailblock, providing leverage to flatten the soundboard.

The spruce block is 3/4" x 1-5/8" x 3-3/8" tall. The 1/4"-diameter tension rod is 9" long. The mounting post has three different positions to accomodate a variety of bridge styles.

Screw mount: This spruce device attaches beneath the bridge via an inlaid screw (a white pearloid dot is included to hide the bridge screw). An adjustable spruce pressure post rests against the tailblock, providing leverage to flatten the soundboard. Better bridge contact and alignment can also enhance sound projection.

Brass pin mount: The pin-mounted version of the JLD Bridge Doctor attaches beneath the bridge using a threaded brass bridge pin. The strings mount horizontally through the tops of the matching brass bridge pins (included).

StewMac Tech Tip: We recommend the brass pin mount version for 12-string guitars.

I have a 42 year old El Degas guitar that I have again started to play. The top has bellied a little leaving the action a little high.I worked down the bottom of the bridge saddle as far as I dared but still wanted a little more. So I purchased a bridge doctor and it got me rest. Plays good changed tone a little but all in all it worked. Great product for the price.
Thanks

Bridge Doctor

Excellent, Someone brought me a guitar that the bridge had come unglued and the top delaminated as well and the top was bulged up behind the bridge.I am a woodworker not a Luthier however as it was an inexpensive factory guitar I agreed to try. After re-gluing the bridge and adding some needed moisture I installed the Guitar Doctor. It proved better than I had hoped. What was junk was now a decent beginner guitar. Thanks, G.D. Please market an Allen wrench to adjust this while the strings are on.

Perfect Solution

I picked up a 1972 Epiphone with a bolt on bridge. It had some belly bulge and the bridge and saddle was leaning forward. The bridge had been glued down at some point. So it was bolted and glued. Other wise the guitar was in great shape. Rather than possibly causing major damage trying to remove it I chose to use the bridge doctor. Now 95% of the bulge and bridge lean is gone. Perfect solution to keep an older guitar working great.

This is an easy way to rotate the bridge back to original position and reduce deflection of the soundboard.

Area 51 Technology?

I've been using the JLD bridge doctors for about ten years and they work great. I ordered my first bridge doctors directly from the Roswell, NM "inventor". It is such a leap forward for guitar repair it may lead one to speculate that this is recovered technology from the 1947 crash.

Happy playing! - Steve

Fantastic doo-hickey! Relatively easy to install, cheap, and permanent.

I've been using these things in my guitar repair for more than 10 years now and I can't praise them highly enough. They do everything the maker claims, and do it supremely well. You can try to flatten bulging guitar tops by replacing bridge plates, regluing bridges, etc. These repairs can be time-consuming and pricey and, because wood has "memory," these repairs almost always fail within a year or two, leaving you back where you started. The Bridge Doctor is an inexpensive and permanent repair, effective as long as you leave the BD in place. On most of the guitars I've used these on, there is a noticeable improvement in sound as well. Whether that's because the bridge is transferring energy to the sides and back via the BD, as the maker claims, or if it's because the top is flat again and operating at peak efficiency, I don't know. But either way, these things are a win-win.

I put this on my Martin D12-20. This guitar has bellied in the past but relaxed after I let it set with no string pressure. Wanted to stabilize soundboard and bridge. Was fairly easy to install and I could see some improved flatness of top. Sound is not quite the same, but still very good - the only person who will notice is me. I like it.

I've installed three of these on relatively inexpensive guitars - two on six-strings after repairing split X-braces and one on a twelve-string and have had great luck with all three. My customers report that the guitars sound a LOT better with the tension from the strings removed from the sound board of their guitars.

Works well for flattening a top

I have been restoring a 60's 12 string acoustic that had been sorely neglected. The bulge behind the bridge was... significant. I humidified the guitar for a week prior to installing the Doctor. Installation was simple. Each day over the next week I did another quarter turn. Easy does it. After a week the top had flattened out and setting up the guitar became possible.

I cant speak to its effect on tone since the guitar was unplayed prior to installation, but I will say the guitar sounds great after restoration.
