Safe Slot Nut Guard Complete Set

About This Item

Stop your file before the slot’s too deep!

Cutting string slots is delicate: if you cut one slot a little too low, you've blown the nut and have to start over. StewMac's own Don MacRostie devised the Safe Slot™ to make accurate nut slotting fast and fumble-free. He shows us how it's done in the video!

A trick the pros use:
Stack feeler gauges against the nut to set your slot depth. When the slotting saw touches the feeler gauges, you've hit your depth. The Safe Slot Nut Guard holds the feeler gauges tightly against the nut, and curved to the radius of your fingerboard. This leaves both hands free for filing. You're able to work faster without worrying about cutting too deep.

  • Holds multiple feeler gauges
  • Pulls gauges tight to match fretboard radius
  • Locks in place against the nut. No slipping!

Perfect string spacing without math
For good playing feel, don't use equal spaces between the strings. Wound strings are thicker, so they need more space than thinner treble strings. In fact, every string space needs to be a little different to feel right in the player's hand.

This set includes a slim version of our String Spacing Rule to show where to put your string slots. Slide it into the Safe Slot, same as a feeler gauge, and see exactly where each string belongs. No measuring, dividing or calculating. Replace the rule with your feeler gauges and you're ready to cut nut slots. Thanks to luthier Ron Baran for the idea of adding this slim spacing rule to the set.

The Safe Slot's felt-padded caul adapts to most neck shapes, and any fingerboard width up to 2-1/16".

Not for Classical Guitars

The clamp doesn't work on Classical Guitars. The spacers are ok as is the ruler for nut groves but the clamp needs to be widened to work. AS mentioned it also doesn't work beyond 2 & 1/16 inches.

Having the right tools makes the job easier, Faster.

After watching several videos on making nuts, I decided to buy the Safe Slot Nut guard set. I really believe this made getting the job done quicker and more efficiently. I could file the slots quickly without having concern about going too deep. All slots were positioned correctly and depth was perfect. Highly recommend this, especially for folks just starting out on repairs.

Works well and saves time, but watch out! I found that on some necks, it does not want to stay put. Without frequent resetting and adjustments the placement will shift.

Do you make nuts for Martins?

By

Verified Buyer

I'm glad everybody else is so enamored with this tool. I am not. I used it to make nuts for a couple of Taylors, and it worked ok. I now have a Martin HD-28 in my shop. This guitar and several other Martins have volutes on the back of the neck at the headstock. When you try to use this tool on a neck with a volute, it flat out doesn't work. The angle of the volute forces the caul and the feeler gage(s) away from the nut as you tighten the screw. I tried to use it that way anyway, with a gap between the gages and the nut, and I blew a slot. Back to filing -put the string in - check the clearance - do that X number of times until I get it right. What did I buy this tool for?

Also; if you have fairly high fret wire like .055" that I often use to re-fret Martins, you are going to need to stack up to .075" worth of feeler gages in this thing and then try to bend that mess down against a fingerboard with a 16" radius. That doesn't happen too easily either. My advice - learn to make a nut without the "crutch" and save your money. Do it enough times and you'll get good at it like anything else.

This is more convenient than holding onto feeler gauges while filing the nut slots. Thanks to StewMac for selling this product.

It's not the easiest way for me

Actually, this link is faulty. I only bought the scale. It's all that they say it is, and probably the shortcoming is me, but there's no easier way for me than to install the strings, low tension, place them, mark the nut and make the slots. For me, that's the system which produces what I had planned. You would need good visual perspective to use this tool well. You still need to account for different string thickness; all the lines are the same width so it's easy to end up with a properly spaced set......off center! It may work well for you.
