JLD Bridge Doctor

About This Item

• Enhances volume
• Flattens 'bellied' soundboards

A unique solution to a common bridge problem, this spruce device attaches beneath a guitar bridge. An adjustable spruce "pressure post" rests against the tailblock, providing leverage to flatten the soundboard.

The spruce block is 3/4" x 1-5/8" x 3-3/8" tall. The 1/4"-diameter tension rod is 9" long. The mounting post has three different positions to accomodate a variety of bridge styles.

Screw mount: This spruce device attaches beneath the bridge via an inlaid screw (a white pearloid dot is included to hide the bridge screw). An adjustable spruce pressure post rests against the tailblock, providing leverage to flatten the soundboard. Better bridge contact and alignment can also enhance sound projection.

Brass pin mount: The pin-mounted version of the JLD Bridge Doctor attaches beneath the bridge using a threaded brass bridge pin. The strings mount horizontally through the tops of the matching brass bridge pins (included).

StewMac Tech Tip: We recommend the brass pin mount version for 12-string guitars.

Beware the counter sunk screw head

By

Verified Buyer

For every action there is an equal opposite reaction. I installed the device, tightened the set screw just enough that the trust post would not spin under finger tight pressure and split the back of the bridge out. The guitar acclimated to a 50% humidity environment for three days before installation. I recommend swapping the counter sunk screw with a proper pan head, binder head, or cheese head screw with a washer. I believe the counter sunk screw acts like a wedge and parts the weaker back of the bridge from the stronger front of the bridge. Mid 70s Alvarez 5014 will need bridge repair now.

Lifesaver!!

The Bridge Doctor coupled with a refret, new bone saddle and nut and my 40 year old Ventura 12 string is alive and well. Plays better that it ever has. The Bridge Doctor remedied a really bad bow under the bridge. So simple and so amazing.

Saved a deep salvage job from total failure!

After replacing the bridge plate a regluing a catastrophically failed bridge (when it failed it took a couple piles of the soundboard with it), this entry-level Yamaha was still belly-bulging badly. 30 minutes after I opened the box the bridge doctor was in. All is now flat, in tune and stable. Amazing value, and this guitar is now being played again instead of awaiting our Wednesday trash pick up. Thanks!

To buy or not to buy from Guitar Center.....

I purchased a multi-thousand dollar 12-string from the people at GC, with the item listed in their Manhattan location and shipped to South Texas. Once strung, the face board of the guitar slowly started to rise, making the action worse and worse. The struts did not seem to be damaged or loose on the face board. So.....what to do? Thank God for the JLD Bridge Doctor, as I was at a loss as to how to salvage this. As this is an Ovation, there are no bridge pins, as they use (in my opinion, the far superior through-bridge). I decided not to drill through the bridge to attach the nylon pin to the face board. I fear that the tapered-head screw supplied will split the bridge. As the Ovation also has the Lyrichord body, the dowel can't be used. I simply glued the top and bottom of the device to the face board and belly of the guitar. So far, so good.

I bought two of these for two of my acoustic guitars. I live in Costa Rica where high humidity is a problem. The installation was pretty simple. I am slowly working to reduce the belly behind the bridge and it is working. This should keep them from further damage.

When I heard Breedlove was shipping these standard I tried a few. Amazing! They work wonders on a bridge that warping a top. I've put them in everything from Nice old Martin's to cheap fenders.

My go-to solution for a bellied top

Been using the JLD Bridge Doctor for years for problem tops. This particular situation was an 1970’s Epiphone that had seen a lot of use with strings a bit heavier than what this instrument was built for. No internal problems failures but the bridge was rolling pushing in the top at the sound hole and pulling up the top behind the bridge. The Bridge Doctor allowed me to get the bridge level again which solved the action problems with some benefit to sustain and projection. I have never had a situation where this product failed to do the job. It’s not a fix for an instrument with bracing problems or othe structural issues unless you address that first. Yes, it’s expensive for what it is, but it’s cheap for what it does!

For what it does

If you have an exquisite acoustic, maybe your going to seek a luthier or factory repair. For everyday player quality and old favorite git-boxes, this is the bomb. It's a DIY repair that works and every time you play your repaired guitar, and it's better than new, you will smile that special smile.
I used the screw type on a thin line Yamaha acoustic/electric destined for the wall art department. Some patient adjustment over 2-3 weeks and no more belly bloat. Marie Osmond would be proud.
