About This Item

The right gauges for cutting and shaping string slots on electric guitars. Six files in each set: choose light, medium or heavy gauge strings.

Our tempered edge-cut nut files produce round-bottom slots for nuts and saddles. Ensure your strings seat properly in the nut without buzzing!

Each chrome-alloy steel file has twin 4" cutting edges. Among our most popular tools, these professional files help you get the job done quickly and correctly.

StewMac tech advisors specify these sets to match your string gauge:

#0881 For Light Strings
0.010", 0.013", 0.016", 0.024", 0.032", and 0.042"

#0882 For Medium Strings
0.010", 0.013", 0.016", 0.028", 0.035", and 0.046"

#0883 For Heavy Strings

Just want one? Each file is also sold individually.

Match the file to the string gauge
Choose a file of the same size as the string, or no more than a few thousandths wider. By rocking the file side to side, you can widen the slot to fit a slightly wider string.

Nut slotting files work great for metal Tune-o-matic bridge saddles. After filing, polish the slot with Mitchell Abrasive Cord to remove file marks.

Why didn't I get these sooner? Why are they sticky?

Great files for slotting grooves in bridge saddles or slotting a nut. These work very well for their intended purpose. Only problem I've had is they came delivered with this sticky residue on the files right out of the package. I'll have to figure out how to clean the residue off so less 1 star.

I've just started using these, but so far they work great. We'll see how long they'll last.

Great tools to have on hand!

These files work perfectly for their intended use. I had intonation issues that I traced to the nut on a T-style guitar I built recently, and solved them in about 15 minutes with these files. They're not cheap, but are of the usual excellent quality that I've come to expect from StewMac. If you own a few electric guitars and like to do as much of your own work as possible, you'll be happy that you picked up a set of these.

Gauged Nut Slotting File Set

These nut slotting files work great, and also save time. I have one comment. Using them can be a little hard on the fingers. Maybe a better handle system would solve the problem, or maybe a grip could be added to bare ends of the files. I intend to dip the bare ends in a liquid-rubber solution to see if that makes gripping them easier on the fingers.

Awesome!

I purchased a new Strat neck from Fender and unfortunately the nut was not slotted. Naturally I panicked and thought "WTF?
Until recently, I had never worked on any of my guitars because I paid some guy to do setups for me. He moved away and instead of looking for someone else, I started watching Youtube videos on how to do stuff. Several Youtubers recommended Stewmac for cool stuff and I purchased some radius gauges and and fret leveling tools. When confronted by the nut slotting issue, I referred to Stewmac again and purchased the nut file set and the nut slotting gauge.
I watched several videos on the proper way to do it, but I was sure I would f*ck it up somehow. Fender puts a very small scratch where the slots should be and off I went. I used my other Strat as a guide for the nut slotting gauge on each string and matched it perfectly on the new neck. When it was all said and done, the guitar now plays so much better that before even better than the guitar I used as a guide. I would NEVER have attempted this without these files and the nut gauge. Thank you, StewMac!
PS, the pic is of the guitar with the new neck and the one I used as a guide.

The right tool for the job!

These nut files will do the trick. However, I do caution that they are sharp, and it doesn't take many passes to put one "too deep in the nut." Measure twice, cut once!!

It does the work done easily and efficiently. No more oversized or too small slots. It files easily into my nylon and bone nut.
