Order fretwire by the pound for tidy savings!
Our bulk fretwire is supplied in convenient clear storage tubes, to keep your wire organized and your workbench uncluttered. You'll save 50% or more when you order fretwire by the pound.

Instrument makers and repair shops rely on us for the highest quality 18% nickel-silver fretwire. We supply our fretwire in 2-foot straight lengths. Order 6 feet for a complete guitar or bass fret job, and 4 feet for a mandolin, banjo or ukulele.

Our fretwire is sized to fit a 0.023" (0.58mm) fret slot width.

Fretwire is made in a variety of crown heights. Note that after the frets are installed and leveled, they can lose from .004" to .010" in height. High fretwire has a crown height of .045" or more. It may offer more note sustain due to its slightly greater mass, and more fret dressings are possible between refrettings. Low fretwire is often useful for partial refret jobs.

Medium high fret wire

By Blackplates from Aberdeen Md.
(Customer's Reviews) Saturday, July 19, 2014

This is it. Its the fret wire most like Gibson "jumbo" fret wire of the mid-late 50's. Its not quite as wide as modern jumbo fret wire and low enough that you wont have to level it down to get to vintage height (unless you want the feel of very worn frets).

Seems to be good

I just finished my 1952 Telecaster copy and used this wire and it seems to be pretty good. I had some issues with a couple pieces seating into the fret board but overall seems pretty good. I am curious to see how well it holds up.

Fretwire

This wire works great. And is tall enough to level and still have plenty of material to crown and polish.

Easy to work with.

I buy in bulk so I don't have to worry about running out. Great quality wire.

Tang Width

By Justin Eisenman from Asheville, NC
(Customer's Reviews) Monday, February 03, 2014

Fret wire is easy to work with, but the tang size is a little to wide for my 2007 D28. I had to file tang on both sides to get it to fit. Stewmac said their fret tang width is all standard...doesn't fit my guitar. Maybe my fault, but still.

Medium Fretwire

(Customer's Reviews) Sunday, February 02, 2014

Easy to work with. Bends and cuts and sands down easily. I completed a neck and still had an entire wire left over. Couple more fret jobs and the next one will be "free".

This medium fretwire is ideal for those that play with a heavy hand.

Outstanding wire...perfect!

A very good wire for replacing worn frets, or doing a fret install on a new fingerboard...5 stars!

Top Notch as usual

By Thomas Childs from Oxford Station Ontario Canada

I have never had a problem with any Stewart Macdonald Products and I have used a fair bit of it. I received my order in great time (considering we are talking shipped to Canada)3 days to the door? WOW!.
I love the periodic catalogs that have been mysteriously landing in my mailbox for a few years.
My Stewart Macdonald link is pasted on my desktop in 4 inch letters because quite simply it is the first place I look for parts. Great stuff!
I buy the fretwire by the pound and you get lots. I believe I did 4 guitars with the last pound. Might have been 5.
