Deadblow Fretting Hammer

About This Item

More efficient no-bounce fret installation. We fitted this durable hammer with a machined brass convex face especially for fretwork.

The shock-absorbing shot-filled head won't bounce like a regular hammer, so it transfers more energy directly to the fret. This helps seat the wire more firmly, with fewer hammer blows and less chance of the fret springing back.

Overall length: 9-1/2" (241.3mm)
Striking surface diameter: 13/16" (20.64mm)
Weight: 1/2 lb. (.2268 kg)

Durable steel-reinforced handle.

Essential for Fretting
This item is 1 of the 7 tools included in our Essential Fretting Tool Set, a compilation of tools you'll need for the fundamentals of fret work. The set also includes our book, Fret Work Step-By-Step by Erick Coleman with Dan Erlewine.

Works on stainless frets, too!
All of our tools are suitable for use on stainless-steel fretwire, with the exception of our Fret Tang Nippers. Modern stainless-steel fretwire is known to be harder than the traditional nickel-silver blends, but our own shop experience indicates the wire does not cause premature wear of files or sandpapers.

I'm a firm believer & user of dead blow hammers. I wanted this combo brass/dead blow for finer work.

Great tool

So much better than the hammer I was using before! It seemed a little small when I first held it but it is the perfect size to control and the weight of the head makes setting frets easy. Should've bought one years ago.

Works great! Well made, does what it is supposed to do. I am just getting into repairing my own guitars. I will purchase the fret pliers next so I can use them for special situations in conjunction with the hammer.

Love the throw on this one

Less effort per strike, much better than my previous hammer. Well worth it. I'm known for my fret work and as professional this is one that you should have for a hammer method.

Its a good hammer to get started

I really like this hammer, even though I prefer the one Ive been using for the past 22 yrs. This hammer has the right things for fretting and if you only start with this one i think you will ge where I am with my hammer of over 22 yrs. The only reason I prefer mine is due to a bit heavier weight.

In contrast, while the weight is a great thing of my older hammer, there is nothing like this one where the strike is more direct and due to the face being narrower. it also lets me hammer frets a bit better for smaller instruments. so needless to say I have put my old hammer to rest and have grown quite fond of this one :-)

Not just a fret hammer

Used it on a couple of refrets. Works fine, but i just prefer my cheapo, domed bottom, craft & jewellery, polished steel hammer. Still trying to figure out the avantages of the 'dead blow' action. A bit gimmicky. Now i use it as a mild hammer for dowels, pins, tapping nuts off, and stuff...
