Good basic tools you'll need to get started.
Includes the definitive Fret Work Step-By-Step book!

Want to learn how to fret a guitar, but not sure how to start or which tools to choose? Stop fretting...and start fretting! Assembled by our experts, the Essential Fretting Took Kit is a great way to master the fundamentals with only a modest investment in good quality tools.

These are the basic tools you'll need for removing, installing, leveling, crowning and inspecting frets.

And to give you the best possible head start, we include Fret Work Step-By-Step book. It's the most complete book ever published on the subject, with techniques, tips, tools and tricks.

The Essential Fretting Kit features the same tools we supply to professional repair shops—good tools that give you the confidence to do good work. They'll help prepare you for more specialized jobs and tools later as your skills develop.

Our professional Deadblow Fretting Hammer is now included in the kit. The shock-absorbing head reduces fret springback, for an easier, more trouble-free fret job.

Kit contents (click the links for details on each tool)
Fret Cutter
Deadblow Fretting Hammer
Fret Leveling File, 6"
Double-edge Fret File, medium/wide
Fret End Dressing File
Fret Dressing Stick with 8 belts (2 of each grit)
Fret Rocker
Fret Work Step-By-Step, 2nd edition

Works on stainless frets, too!
All of our tools are suitable for use on stainless-steel fretwire, with the exception of our Fret Tang Nippers and Fret Cutters. Modern stainless-steel fretwire is known to be harder than the traditional nickel-silver blends, but our own shop experience indicates the wire does not cause premature wear of files or sandpapers.

Great way to get started

I've always had a fear of frets/fret work etc... I think this kit is the perfect way to get started, the included book is great and explained a lot of things I wasn't sure about. I have since re-fretted a practice neck, leveled & dressed a vintage Kay banjo neck, and have leveled a fingerboard & inlays and am getting ready to add frets to my Tricone resophonic guitar project!

I bought this for my first ever fret/refret job. In spite of my inexperience, between the book, tools, and some online Erlewine videos, I ended up with a professional looking, well playing fret job. The other tools I made to complete the fret work are a maple caul to press and set the frets down tight after hammering, and a radius block to level sand and clean up the fret board.

Great Kit

This is a great kit, because you will use most of these tools for things other than fretting. So even if you only occasionally do fret work these tools will still be useful.

I tried some of the "cheapies" that claim to be as good as StewMac. Trust me, they're not. That old line, "you're only as good as the tools you use" ain't no old line, it's true. P A Boyer

5 stars for what you get. My only complaint is I think you really need fret bending pliers (1696) or something to bend the fretwire to the radius of the fretboard. I consider that "essential." Also the book is ok but the DVD (Fret Basics) is much much better. The DVD really shows you how to do everything step-by-step, which, ironically, the book doesn't do. I highly recommend the fret basics dvd along with this! Lastly, you'll need at least one radius block to sand the frets after leveling them. I consider that basic. The fret rocker is very cool and I am sure I will get a lot of use out of it, but I would've preferred to have fret bending pliers or radius blocks instead, and buy the fret rocker later. Anyway, you can't go wrong with this kit, I'd just add the above things to it.
