Basic Setup Kit

About This Item

Make any guitar play better.
Our top 3 tools for acoustic and electric setup are in this money saving set!

We're often asked to recommend "must-have" tools for setting up guitars. So we've made it easy: the Basic Setup Kit features our most popular setup tools. These are the same super-accurate, high quality steel setup tools that professional repair shops depend on.

String Action Gauge (inches): The fastest way to measure the height of strings, nuts, saddles and pickup polepieces. Designed for stringed instrument work, it's much faster to use than any ruler.

18" Precision Straightedge : Machined for fanatic accuracy (to ±.0015" per foot)! Use it to check neck relief and evaluate truss rod adjustments.

Understring Radius Gauges : A big help for matching bridge saddle heights to the fretboard curvature, for easier playability. Accurately laser-cut from stainless steel, the set includes 9 different fretboard radii.

Free Instructions : Erick Coleman walks you through basic setup instructions to have your guitar playing great in no time.

Truss rod adjustment is an important part of guitar setup, too.
Our Truss Rod Wrench Set has the tool you need.

Setup "must-haves"

(Customer's Reviews)

I own all three of the tools in this kit separately. Now, they are offered together. This is a great thing, because these are the first three tools I pull out when performing a final setup (the fourth is usually a corresponding truss rod wrench). Using the Precision Straightedge, I preset the truss rod with the guitar unstrung. I will set it so that the straightedge "rocks" a very tiny bit around the middle of the fingerboard, when placed across the frets. 99% of the time, this will yield the optimal amount of relief when the neck is under string tension. Next, I measure both E strings, using the String Action Gauge. Once those are set, you choose the correct Radius Gauge (by matching its underside to the fingerboard radius), place it under the strings by the bridge, and set your saddles so that all of the strings just kiss the top of the Radius Gauge, and you are DONE! The saddles are set perfectly, and this is how the guitar plays best. No eyeballing. BTW- Don't let Tune-O-Matic bridges fool you. The saddle slots often need some "massaging" with a corresponding-gauge Nut Slot File to get all of the string heights even.

If your serious about your setups, whether you are a pro like myself, or just want to keep your own guitars in maximum playable condition, these are MUST-HAVE tools.
