Fretting series covers most everything, enough to send you down the right path. Sense then I have learned additional techniques as you will with practice. This is a great place to start.

Fret Basics DVD

By Bob Ruth from Deer Park, TX
(Customer's Reviews) Monday, March 10, 2014

The day I got the DVD I slipped it into the player and watched it, end to end, like a movie. I was well pleased with Dan's ability to explain what he was doing as he went. All too many times, when it comes to the "masters", they can "do" much more effectively than they can "teach". Not so with Dan. He knows what he is doing so well that he makes it look deceptively easy. Then, when he explains the process so well, it begins to seem that the concept IS easy and that is JUST enough to give me hope that I might be able to perform the steps he describes. One particular "hole" that he filled for me was the setup of the neck prior to leveling. That is.. getting it straight and in the right position before leveling the frets and I have never quite had a grip on how to do that. And, as the name implies "Fret Basics" all of his work is done with hand tools. Some are indeed specialty tools that must be purchased but others are things that one might already have on hand or can be adapted from an ordinary tool. Dan explains the use of each tool that he uses. I would say that, if one ever hopes to be able to perform their own fret leveling/crowning this DVD should be considered an essential place to start. Thank you Dan!

Fretting made easy

I am a visual learner so these DVD's are great for me. I got fret basics, and after watching the DVD I can honestly say that Dan has made the process of fretting an instrument simple. For the novice/DIYer, he show's you the tools he used when just starting out, everyday things found round the house and mentions a few specialty items that help make the job easier.

An apprenticeship on disc

By Jim J. Donaldson from Findlay, Ohio
(Customer's Reviews) Sunday, August 11, 2013

After watching all of the DVDs (yeah, a few times) I'd say this is almost an apprenticeship on disc. The training is well paced and is easy to watch. Mr. Erlewine takes you through the different tasks as you might experience them, fixing problems that might pop up along the way. I really enjoyed the demonstration of tools and techniques you can use to get the job done.

For use with Erlewine neck Jig ONLY!

By Luke1236 from Baltimore
(Customer's Reviews) Wednesday, July 24, 2013

If you have the Erlewine neck jig this is a decent video. If you don't its useless. I understand that stew Mac is a tool company and they have to market tools and that is why the trade secrets archive shows a lot of useful solutions using their tools and jigs. However for the price of this instructional video I would think that they would show us the core content, in this case re-fret, in a non commercial fashion. After watching the video a few times I took very little away because he use the ERLEWINE NECK JIG for everything. He also focuses on using the fret jaws as well. So in order for this video to be useful I would have to buy those tools. Luthiers re-fret without the neck jig and I wish that a video that I paid a lot of money for would showcase something other then the neck jig. If the video description said "for use with the neck jig" that would have saved me a lot of money. The FRET book from SM is better all around book and cheaper! More info too

These are the most comprehensive videos I have seen. If you can't refret after these instructions you should let someone else do it

Extremely informative

By Fleer from Imperial, Mo.
(Customer's Reviews) Wednesday, March 20, 2013

I think when most folks order instructional material, they are hoping to find the exact solution to their problem. I realize this is not very reasonable. I am a little disappointed that the whole thing is about guitars and only guitars. No mention made of flat fingerboards or narrow fretwire. Dan is a great teacher.

Very informative!

By Kroeber from Japan
(Customer's Reviews) Sunday, October 07, 2012

As with any other video by Dan I have watched, nothing else can be as educational and useful for amateurs, such as myself, and probably professionals alike, except, of course, being an apprentice to Dan. Great video!
