There is no dvd that help you see some real scenarios. Very very poor book. You can find better on internet.

These guys got it right. Every word straight up right. I wouldn't even consider finishing without it.

Worth it for color chart alone

The new color chart is awesome. On this guitar there were some scratches, which I wet sanded out. It left some bare wood however, and simply clearing over it didn't darken it to the surrounding color as I anticipated it would.

I fumbled around a bit trying to touch that area up using shellac dissolved in grain alcohol, with some tints I had on hand added. As you can see, some of my first efforts looked like a dog did its business on the guitar. Not good. When this book came in, I found the color chart to be a godsend.

I held the color chart up to the guitar and saw that the 95% Lemon Yellow, 5% Red Mahogany recipe looked almost exactly the same. I immediately ordered some lemon yellow and red mahogany tints and started experimenting.

It took me a while, but when I finally got it right, I was amazed. A touchup on wood tinted this light was a nightmare but I got through it with the help of this book. And all I needed to use were those two tints, just like the chart said. Now I can put some clear finish over the shellac and get ready to give the guitar back.

I'm sure this will come in handy plenty of times in the future too. Tons of great information in this book, but I feel like it's worth the price just for the color chart alone.

Excellent and technical but I would still want someone looking over my shoulder the first time! Though Dan is right about practicing on some clunker bodies.

This book is excellent, really thorough for painting of all types, but needs a section of in depth oil finishing like tung oil etc. show all steps like you did for painting. oiling necks and such are really popular would really like to see this in an updated version. well worth the money.

This book has a lot of good info some I knew some I don't. But if it saves me time or helps me avoid making a mistake or 2 or 10 then it's money not just well spent but money made. Good book for any body that works with wood not just guitars.ALOHA & much Mahalos

More than for just guitars

I ordered the book to learn to apply guitar type finishes to the flutes I make. It has proven to be an excellent coverage of the entire finishing process including alternative finishes and techniques. I was not left with any questions unanswered and the quality of the book, the presentation and the results was of the highest quality.

I highly recommend this book and I would say to buy it first, before others in the same genre.
