Great Choice

Thought I'd give these a try based on all the positive reviews and the fact I've never had locking tuners. I put these on a resonator guitar so the strings are always on the heavy side. The only tools I used was a scribe, twist drills, and a nut driver. I shy'd away from a hand drill. I arranged the tuners/keys for the best spread for my fingers and must say the process was easier than I thought. I found the template (part of the box) to be useless. I don't think any type of jig or template is really necessary. I broke a wound G string and learned NOT to over-tighten the locks cause they can cut or compromise a string. I had to use a twist drill to slightly widen the low E post hole to accept an .056. The 12:1 is no problem at all and actually works out well since I frequently change tunings. There is a little play in the keys (I wouldn't call it sloppy) but this does not affect tuning stability. I am happy with the overall feel and quality of these tuners. I actually broke two of the tuners these are replacing (heavy strings = crazy pressure). I don't see that happening with these Sperzels.

I've installed these on more than a few of my own guitars, love 'em. Def recommend using a drill jig for install.. (marking and drilling freehand for the locating pins can be challenging). I've noticed that besides more accurate, easier tuning, these locking tuners added more sustain and better tone to every guitar i've put them on.

VALUE FOR MONEY

Very good quality, nice looking, great job, easy to fix it (not only for Gibson LP). I should prefer a better ratio (at least 16:1) but i thing this is a minor issue. Hope it stays in tune for years (I'll wait some years to give the fifth star:-)) . Stewmac is very reliable and professional in shipping all over the world. Nice job guys!

Almost great, but...

I love these tuners with 2 small exceptions:

1) Sometimes large string gauges are hard to get through the hole.
2) This is more important. There is a little bit of play in the worm gear mechanism. The quality is exceptionally good except for this worm gear play. With strings to tension, this is not very noticable, but it doesn't change the fact that it exists.

Love my Sperzels

I have Sperzels on all of my guitars. They are the best replacements for tuners on guitars you have trouble getting to stay in tune due to various issues. I've been putting them on all my guitars for almost 20 years, the most recent was my new Gibson SG. I would suggest also purchasing the jig they sell to drill the hole for installing them. It makes installing the Sperzel heads fast and perfect every time. I also like the idea of the alignment pin instead of screws so your not making multiple holes in your head stock and if you decide to put the original tuners back on your guitar there are no visible marks left!

Better than I imagined, worth it 100%. Compared to my last tuners, these tuners are the best. They look good also. Do not hesitate on getting these.

I have two sets of these. They are a kinda heavy, but make your life really easy when tuning and replacing strings. Really, I would not change them for any reason.

Great tuners

These are awesome tuners. I have them in my electrics as well as my acoustics. Installing them is somewhat tricky, and they may come out crooked even if you use the included cardboard template. StewMac sell a nice little jig to solve that issue. I always hear people complain about the ratio, as these are 12:1 and there are some tuners out there that have an 18:1 ratio. In all my 30 years as a guitarist I have never encountered a player that could not reasonably tune a guitar because of a 12:1 ratio. You can blame that on deafness, but not on the ratio. The tuning stability and ease of string changing is worth every penny you pay for these tuners. Get them.
