Golden Age Restoration Tuners for Solid Peghead Guitar with Square-end

About This Item

"People who build replica instruments or who do restoration or repair work are just going to love these."
—Frank Ford, vintage instrument repair expert

Pre-war style tuners reborn!
Exclusively from Stewart-MacDonald, our replica 3-on-plate tuners featuring square worm supports on rectangular steel plates. Their improved 15:1 gear ratio provides better tuning than the originals, and our popular relic nickel finish complements vintage hardware.

Short string post also available: Original-style short string posts made especially for tapered-thickness solid pegheads, such as pre-war Gibson® L-0, L-00, J-45, J-35 and Nick Lucas guitars.

Golden Age tuners are the rebirth of popular early 20th Century tuning machine designs, featuring simple steel plates and open gears. Replacements for the originals have long been sought by collectors and repairmen, to restore older guitars and improve their tuning. They add an authentic look to reproduction guitars.

  • 15:1 gear ratio for improved tuning
  • Vintage-style riveted worm supports
  • Original-shape knobs; relic nickel tuners have knobs with a matte finish
  • 0.236" (6.00mm) string post diameter
  • Press-fit peghead bushings
  • Original mounting screw spacing (screws included)
  • 1-3/8" (34.93mm) string post spacing

Also available to fit slotted pegheads.

"The Golden Age Restoration tuners are really great. I have just put them onto my 1929 Gibson L-1...I like the fact that someone went to the trouble of making them look right."
—John Evans, Brussels Belgium

"Great tuners with the right look and feel! The only thing different about them is that they are better made and more functional."
—Richard Barnes, Pomona CA

Installation Tips

Peghole spacing: Plate-mounted tuners can't work efficiently if the pegholes are improperly aligned. Our Tuner Drill Jig ensures the correct 1-3/8" post spacing for accurate tuning.

Bushings: We recommend the #2066 Bushing Reamer (.290" diameter) to cut a clean, accurate counterbore for a professional job. Fit the press-fit tuner bushings correctly so your tuners will work smoothly.

Mounting screws: Pilot holes required. Installing delicate screws into hard wood requires great care and accuracy. We highly recommend the #1714 Depth-stop Drill Bit (3/32" bit) for the pilot hole before installing these screws. Lubricate the screw threads with cutting lubricant (also wax or a bar of soap) to reduce friction and help them thread properly.

Great looking vintage style tuners

I've used a few of these and love then. The look is close to vintage, they are tight and smooth operating, why fight with old worn out parts when you can replace with quality accurate tuners.

Easy drop-in replacement

These fit into my late-1930s Kalamazoo KG-14 nearly perfectly. One screw on each side went in just slightly off-center, but straightened up when tightened. They are a serious improvement over the originals. They operate smoothly and reliably. I used the bell-end tuners for my 1946 ES-125, as well.

For this price and this quality, these are an absolute no-brainer!

These keys have the vintage look and feel. They'll look great on the 1923 L series restoration I'm working on.

Just what the doctor ordered

Purchased these to replace the trashed originals on a '38 Gibson/Wards L-00 size guitar. Visually, the Golden Age units are a very near though not exact match, and the relic job is a bit industrial but works quite well. Fit was excellent -- I kept the original bushings -- with the exception of one screw hole in each of the plates. Function is extraordinarily good. Eyeballing the units shows excellent design, materials, and construction, and in use the tuners are smooth, accurate, and stable... unlike the originals! IMO, these are excellent, and extraordinary value for money. Very, very pleased -- and I'm fussy.

Work great, look great....

Used them as a drop-in replacement for the tuners that came on my '16 Gibson J-35. Aside from looking sharper, they tune smoothly. This is the fourth set of Golden Age Restoration tuners I've installed on my guitars over the past few years and I've yet to run into a problem. Fantastic product at a reasonable price.

Golden Age Restoration Tuners for Solid Peghead

By
(Customer's Reviews)

These are a suitable replacement for the terrible stock tuners on my Gretsch Jim Dandy. The bottom screws will align, the second from the top will be at an angle (I did not refill/redrill or use at all) and a new hole must be drilled for the top screw (which I did). Thus, each of the plates are secured by 3 screws only. Stability is not a problem though. The design fits the guitar's vintage look and performance is good at this price point. Recommended!

Relic nickel 3 on a side tuners on a vintage 1935 L-00 acoustic

Tuner barrels fit perfectly. The 1-3/8" between them dead nuts. Only thing I had to do was drill out two middle fastener holes 0.078" drill for the slotted screws.
These work great and what a nice smooth turn to the correct pitch!!! I recommend.
